I knew 'Charlie' as a teenager. This would be in the 1963–1968-time frame. I never considered him a friend even though he hung out in the same loose knit gang we all belonged to. We weren't thugs back then but bored teenagers doing trivial pranks in the neighborhood and picking on one another. Overall, I'd say we had fun and didn't do the community a whole lot of damage in the process, but in 1968 I started a part time job which took me away from the gang and onto bigger and better things.
Charlie passed away young and no idea what took him, but as a teen he was very thin and rather tall - plus, he smoked a lot. RIP Charlie. The gang will meet again at the Trout home, cook their steaks, drink their booze and make obscene phone calls while the ole man is picking his wife up in downtown DC.

I met Wayne once in 1957 when my brother and I were staying at his parent's home in Wilson NC due to our mother's nervous breakdown(s). Wayne and his sister Judy were home for the upcoming Christmas holidays. Wayne was in some type of military academy and Judy was in a school for the deaf. That's all I knew at the time.
I was about 6-7 at the time and it was cold and blustery - nearing Christmas 1957. Wayne, my brother and I went out into the fields where Wayne shot birds and put them in a sack. We had baked birds for dinner that evening. It wouldn't be so strange if not for the fact his mother, my aunt, who baked the birds, were not driving around in a '56 Thunderbird.
Never saw them again afterward. Both are passed now. Wayne and Judy's father - James (Jimmy) Dilda passed away a few months later in June 1999.

I never knew "Butch" personally while he was living. I came to know who he was because my wife is the half-sister of his widow Monika. My brother also married a sister in the same family, and he knew Butch as they both worked for the C&P phone company at the time. Butch worked in Southern Maryland. My brother worked in Downtown DC. I was stationed at NAS JAX at the time of the accident in April 1971. I had no idea who Butch was at that time. I came to learn that my mother-in law and Butch would share beer and discussion over the table, and he was much loved by the family. Family members still speak fondly of him. What a loss.
Butch is survived by 3 children, Darren - who passed away in the late 70's due to leukemia, Mark Boring and Sharon Boring - all living in Florida. There are also a few grandchildren out there, but I don't have their names. My wife has regular discussions with Monika - who also lives in Florida, but Butch is not a topic of discussion.

James E Dilda of Wilson, Wilson County, NC was born on February 26, 1915, and died at age 84 years old on May 10, 1999.
Going way back to 1957 when my brother and I stayed with my aunt Francis and her husband Jimmy in Wilson North Carolina while my mother was hospitalized. I guess I was 7 at the time and my brother 12. From what I was told, Jimmy had worked for DC transit in the early 40's, similar to my father, but abruptly left that job to move from DC to Northa Carolina before my brother was born in 1945. Hanky-Panky - my father thought so -- as told to me.
Now, Jimmy had 2 acres of land along a highway that was carved out of a much larger family farm, so he had a miniature farm with chickens, a hog and a garage where he worked freelance on cars. I vividly recall the garage side yard chock-full of old spark plugs. We had no idea what work aunt Francis was involved in, but she had 2 kids of her own. The daughter (Judy) was in a school for the deaf in NC and Wayne was in some type of military academy, so neither were home except for Christmas.
There were some good memories and some odd memories during this stay. The hog was eventually slaughtered, and man were the spareribs out-of-this world, but next came the boiled chitterlings with my brother and I hugging the toilet. Man were those chitterlings nasty. Strangely, one night our aunt came into the room with a small chocolate treat - only the next day, without warning, we both had the runs and getting a whopping for messing our drawers. Moreover, when Wayne came home for Christmas, we went out shooting birds - that ended up on the differ table. The dichotomy was stunning even for a 7-year-old: Wild birds for dinner while the aunt is driving a 1956 Thunderbird convertible.
I never saw Wayne or Judy again after that Christmas in 1957. I understand Wayne passed away a few months before Jimmy (1999) and Judy passed away a few years ago. I did run into Jimmy once again at a family gather in the mid-90s and the last I saw Aunt Francis was when she, and her mother, picked me up at National Airport for the funeral of my mother October 11, 1971. Strange how some things are like yesterday.

Levita (Spencer) came to live with her aunt in 1967 in what is now named Torque St. in the Bradbury Heights subdivision of Capital Heights, MD. Her parents were apparently killed in a car accident in 1967 and her aunt took her in, but it was not the best suited household for a young child to grow up in. I lived across the street, but once I went into the military in 1970, I lost contact and only saw her occasionally when my wife held an annual birthday party for our son in the early 80's. I learned of her passing some years later and I really regret not being a better friend.
