Stephen's parents were Herbert S Sondheim, 1895-1966, and Etta Janet Fox, 1898-1992. He had half-siblings, Herbert B Sondheim Jr, 1943-1994, and Walter Sondheim (survived him).
Stephen's father owned a dressmaking company and his mother (known as "Foxy") was a designer for the company. But when Stephen was 10, his father abandoned the family. In the 1940 federal census, mother "Janet" and Steven (sic) were living in NYC with a maid and a butler. Janet was married and not working, Steven was in school.
On December 31, 2017, he married Jeffrey Scott Romley in Brooklyn NY, and Jeffrey survives him.
You can scroll down to read a story from the New York Times about Mr. Sondheim.
Steve was born to Abdulfattah Jandali (born in Syria in 1931, a Muslim, who attended the University of Wisconsin, PhD) and Joanne Schieble (Swiss/German Catholic, born in the US) and he was adopted by Paul and Clara (Hagopian) Jobs. His adoptive father Paul was a Coast Guard mechanic prior to marrying Clara.
According to Abdulfattah, Joanne left him and moved to San Francisco (behind his back) and she alone chose an adoptive family who was "Catholic, well-educated, and wealthy". After that couple changed their minds about adoption, Steve was placed with Paul and Clara but Joanne refused to sign the adoption papers because they didn't have a college education. After they pledged to pay for Steve's college education, she consented.
Steve had a biological sister, Mona Simpson, and an adoptive sister, Patricia (with whom he grew up). By 1959, the entire Jobs family had moved to Mt View, CA. While a seeming loner to classmates, he said that he loved hanging out with his father and "building things" as well as the adult engineers who lived in their neighborhood.
Steve had said that he was bored in school and was often in trouble for "resisting authority." His mother had taught him to read when he was a toddler and he had an (obviously!) bright, quick mind. By 4th grade, however, he had a teacher who knew how to reach him and he did so well, he ended up skipping 5th grade. And when they moved to Los Altos in 1967 and he was in a new school, he began to thrive. The school was in the Cupertino school district where a lot of the fathers were engineers. And it was in this house that Apple Computer, his first business founded with co-founder Steve Wozniak was born.
Since he grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area during the late 1960s and early 1970s, he went through many of the same experiences that his peers did: exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship; creative, new music; cultural diversity; civil protest (Woz went to UC Berkeley and he often visited there); and drug experimentation. All of these influences as well as the bright minds of his biological parents and the steadying influence of his adoptive parents, probably lead to his becoming an extraordinary and inventive entrepreneur.
He was survived by his wife Laurene, with whom he had three children. He also had a daughter with a long-time girlfriend who he dated before marrying.
Scroll down for a CNET obituary that includes much of his business career as well as some of his quotes about life.
All of us Apple users celebrate your life, Steve - and miss your influence on Apple corporation. What wonderful new creations would we have had by now?
After President William McKinley was assassinated in September of 1901, 6 months into his second term, Theodore Roosevelt succeeded him to become the 26th President of the United States. A Republican, he is usually ranked as one of the 5 best Presidents. He was awarded the Medal of Honor (he led the Rough Riders in the Spanish American War after resigning as the Asst Secretary of the Navy) and a Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 (for successfully brokering an end to the Russo-Japanese War).
A lifelong naturalist, Roosevelt made conservation a top priority for his administration, and established many new national parks, monuments and forests. He championed the Square Deal set of domestic policies which promised citizens fairness, breaking of trusts, regulation of railroads, and pure food and drugs.
A champion of progressive policies continuing into his 2nd term, he started construction on the Panama Canal and generally focused on Central America in his foreign policies.
After his two first terms, he founded the Bull Moose Party (which called for wide-ranging progressive reforms) and ran again for President in 1912. Splitting the vote, he lost and Democrat Woodrow Wilson won.
Beverly Washington was born in Spokane Washington and is sister to business tycoon Dennis R Washington (born 1934). She grew up in Bremerton Washington and later moved to Willow Glen located in Santa Clara county in the California Bay Area. Beverly moved from Bremerton to the San Jose area at age 15 when her mother, Ginger, moved to San Jose. Later, my grandmother, Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch, also moved to the area in order to be with her friend Beverly. Marian and Beverly were best friends for most of their lives and actually married both of their husbands within four months of each other, having their eldest children, Debra and Kathy, at almost the same time.
Beverly was married to transportation entrepreneur Al Scoffone and they had three children: Debra Lyn, Steven & David Scoffone and eight grandchildren. She has lived in Monte Sereno California since the 1960s. Beverly was a Board of Fellows member at Santa Clara University and was President of Valle Monte in 1979. See: Beverly Clarice (Washington) Scoffone: Obituary.

Anne Frank, born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany, is an iconic figure known for her diary, which has become a testament to the human spirit and a powerful symbol of resilience in the face of adversity. As a Jewish girl growing up during the Holocaust, Anne's life was tragically cut short, but her words have left an indelible mark on history.
In 1933, Anne and her family fled Germany to escape the persecution of Jews under the Nazi regime, settling in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. While in hiding during World War II, Anne chronicled her experiences, thoughts, and dreams in her diary, which she received as a gift on her thirteenth birthday. This diary, known as "The Diary of a Young Girl" or simply "Anne Frank's Diary," has since been published in numerous languages and has touched the hearts of millions worldwide.
Anne's diary (see Anne Frank's Diary Published in English 65 Years Later) vividly portrays her personal growth, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering hope for a better future. Through her eloquent and introspective writings, she provided a unique perspective on the daily challenges faced by those in hiding and the profound impact of the Holocaust on individuals and families.
Tragically, Anne and her family were discovered by the Nazis in 1944 and deported to concentration camps. Anne perished at the young age of 15 in the Bergen-Belsen camp in early 1945, just weeks before its liberation.
Despite her untimely death, Anne Frank's diary continues to resonate with readers of all ages, offering a glimpse into the resilience, courage, and unwavering spirit of a young girl amidst unimaginable circumstances. Her story serves as a reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust and the enduring power of hope, compassion, and the written word. Anne Frank's legacy lives on as a symbol of humanity's ability to find light in the darkest of times and serves as a timeless voice for tolerance, understanding, and the pursuit of justice.
