Grave stones at the cemetery in Campo Felice Di Rocella Sicily for Joseph Mazzurco (1908-1995 ) and his wife Josephine Parasiliti Mazzurco (1913 to 2009). They both immigrated to the USA for several years, but then they both returned home to Sicily in later years, where they both passed away. They are sorely missed by all their relatives, and grandchildren, in Jamestown NY, USA.

Josephine and Joseph Mazzurco kept this picture of their three great grandchildren on their night table in a silver frame, next to their bed in Campo Felice di Rocella Sicily. This picture was likely taken around 1988, since David, the baby in arms was born in Dec, 1987. This was a reminder that even though Joseph and Josephine moved back to Italy as snowbirds, back and forth across the Atlantic ocean, they never forgot their grand daughter Gina, and their three grandkids, Daniel Alejandro Gonzalez, far left, Nicholas Joseph Gonzalez, who is the "figliozzo" in the middle, and David Neil Gonzalez, baby in arms. The adults in this back of this picture are from left, father of these three children, Gregorio Alejandro Gonzalez Monroy, and mother of these three children, Regina Marie Mazzurco Gonzalez. This picture was taken by a traveling salesman over at Woodlawn Motel in Jamestown NY, back when it really was a motel. It was turned into a huge 16 by 20 portrait, but that may have gotten lost in the several moves since then. It is nice that some Sicilian cousins shared this via social media back with the mother pictured here some thirty five years later. This is a reminder, that despite time and distance, the love of grandparents endures.

This is the ice cream shop right across the street from Aunt Violet's old apt in Frewsburg NY. In the mid 1970s, all I had to do was go out her front door, cross the yard, cross the street, and there I was, at the Igloo (now renamed as The Corner Scoop) Ice Cream Shop. My mother's favorite was Maple Walnut or Butter Pecan Perry's Hard Ice Cream Cones. My Dad liked Black Cherry Perry's Hard Ice Cream Cones the best. I used to dabble in the Mexican Sundae a lot. My sister liked Hot Fudge Sundaes. And we all loved the Banana Splits.

The people in my family who lived right across the street from it were Aunt Violet, and Santina and Denny Johnson. Santina and Denny lived in a house that looked like it was planted in the middle of Aunt Violet's front yard! right across the street from the Igloo / Corner Scoop Ice Cream Shop. We stayed in touch for many years. Santina moved to 126 Sampson Street and eventually became my son David's babysitter so I could go to work sometimes. She was an awesome person to talk to, and she had great stories to tell about her time growing up in an all girls parochial school, and her times spent in both Africa and Italy. Aunt Violet eventually moved over to Cherry St Senior Housing in Frewsburg.

I tried to stay in touch with cousin Marcia, Great Aunt Violet, and Santina and Denny Johnson, after my mother Lindaโ€™s death in 1980 as much as I could. By pure stroke of luck, I gave Aunt Violet a ride home one day from the Armory when she had fallen down some concrete steps. My heart skipped a beat when I realized this woman I was picking up off the pavement, with a bloody scraped up nose, was actually my Great Aunt Violet, whom I had not seen in a long, long time. This is how I learned my Great Aunt Vi had moved into senior housing behind the Hotel Frewsburg on Cherry St. So I began to visit her there occasionally, until she moved to a nursing home and then passed away in 2008. I once even unwittingly picked up a hitchhiker, who turned out to be Aunt Violet's grandson, (Terri 'Travis' and Marcia's third born son), my cousin Stevie, when he was hitchhiking back home to Frewsburg one day. Imagine both of our surprises to find out we were related. I had not seen him since I was a kid. I was told later he also died but I have no details on this. On some occasions, in the early to mid 1970s, Travis and Marcia Johnson would leave their log cabin to come visit us at our house at 40 Valley View Drive in Frewsburg NY. I vividly remember one time, New Yearโ€™s Eve, at 40 Valley View Drive. Of course my sister Cathy and I wanted to stay up and be present for all the fun, but we were told to โ€œGO TO BED!โ€ But we only pretended to go to bed. Instead, we sneaked out of our rooms, and sat ourselves quietly in the carpeted hallway, hiding just around the corner so we could not be seen, but we could hear everything. Our parents were having drinks and playing Monopoly. We called him Terri in those years, so it was Terri and Marcia playing Monopoly with our parents. They were having so much fun joking around, and of course the Monopoly game dragged on for hours. Quiet and stealthily as kittens, my sister and I sneaked quietly closer and closer to get a closer look at the action. We were finally all the way in the living room watching the Monopoly game unfurl at the kitchen table. (My mother Linda sometimes allowed me to sneak out of bed to watch Johnny Carson on late night tv with her sometimes too, if I could stay calm and quiet.) As usual my Dad was winning at Monopoly. He had the most property and most hotels and houses. But somehow, Terri, (Travis) managed to turn the tide of the Monopoly game, and win with a huge grin on his face. How did he do it? How did he manage to pay those exorbitant rents on the hotels on Park Place and Boardwalk and still survive and bankrupt everyone and win? After a good laugh or two, he came clean and explained that he had hidden up his sleeve several extra five hundred dollar bills from his own Monopoly game at home and used them during the game. And he could not stop smiling about it. That was the far out sense of humor he had. My father had often called Travis a hippie. I guess that is how hippies play Monopoly. I know I was so surprised and I wanted to laugh too. But my Dad, who is a professional landlord in real life, did not smile about it, so I tried not to smile too much either. They did not come over to play Monopoly anymore after that. But Sandy Swanson in later years told me they spent other New Yearโ€™s Eves together with her and her husband, Tom, listening to music, drinking and dancing, so they all still remained good friends. After this, my sister and I often got to spend New Years Eve with Frewsburg babysitters, like Kimberly Lawson, or Andy Proctorโ€™s three older sisters, while our parents went out to see their friends or family, like Sandy Swanson, her husband Tom, Santina and Denny Johnson, with Travis and Marcia Johnson and others included. In the early nineteen seventies, Travis built a log cabin for his growing nuclear family way outside of town. It was way out on Scott Hill Road just outside of Frewsburg NY in the town of Carroll NY. It was a unique house. It was set in a clearing among shaded trees in a forest, and was very far back from the road, just across the road from Sandy and Bob Spencerโ€™s house. The log cabin could not actually be seen from the road. It had a very long and winding driveway that led up to it. Travisโ€™s log cabin did not have a green grassy half acre of lawn, like our 3 bedroom ranch house at 40 Valley View Drive. Travisโ€™s log cabin was surrounded by shade trees, and bushes, and a creek running through the property with lots of wild critters everywhere. The inside of the house was covered by his artwork and mountain man paintings on every wall of every room. My sister and / or I frequently wound up at Travisโ€™s house for the inevitable ladies only coffee hours. In the mid seventies, women often told their children โ€œGo outside and play!โ€ And so there we were, often stuck with โ€œnothing to doโ€ out in the middle of nowhere, in a log cabin surrounded by trees and forest, while our mom was enjoying coffee and a cigarette in the house with her cousin Marcia. To alleviate our constant boredom, Travis would often take us on a tour around the outside of the house, to look at all the things going on outside, and his critters, and his traps. We loved spending time with Travis. Although he kept a day job at Vac Air Alloys, Travis was a prolific artist, musician, and comedic storyteller fully capable of keeping two young girls entertained for hours with his tours of his property, his stories and songs. He was a great conversationalist and he did not seem to tire out from our constant presence or nagging questions. We enjoyed hanging out with him immensely. Photo of Terri Johnson Terri Johnson
