Lakota on Standing Rock Reservation
This picture comes from the McLaughlin, S.D. Diamond Jubilee book, 1984. The caption tells it all. This is where my great grandparents settled in 1917, winning a land lottery to homestead on Standing Rock Reservation. My g. grandfather knew many of these Lakota personally, and helped them where the government failed woefully, mostly with food.
Johannes and Christine Fuerst
A photo of my second great grandparents, Johannes and Christine (Benszinger) Fuerst, in front of their home in Hutchinson County, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). I'm sure this was taken by a traveling photographer from the east. Johannes and Christine were married just before the whole Fuerst family left S. Russia (Ukraine today), to come to the U.S. Christine died in April of 1883, under somewhat mysterious circumstances, in Woodbury County, Iowa, according to the family story. I can't find any document of any sort concerning her death or burial. If anyone knows anything concerning Christine's death, I sure would like to hear from them. [contact link]

Christian & Margarethe Zimmerman
A photo of my second great grand parents, Christian and Margarethe (Diede) Zimmerman, in front of their home shortly after they had arrived in the U.S. They were Germans whose family had migrated to S. Russia (Ukraine today), and then to the U.S. to escape the growing Bolshevik movement. Hundreds of their family members died in Russia. They were happy to get to the U.S. with all their children, a few of them ahead of Christian and Margarethe, including my great grandfather, Jacob.

I want to build a place where my son can meet his great-grandparents. My grandmother Marian Joyce (Benning) Kroetch always wanted to meet her great-grandchildren, but she died just a handful of years before my son's birth.
So while she didn't have the opportunity to meet him, at least he will be able to know her.

My father's side is full blood Sicilian and my mother's side is a combination of Welsh, Scottish, German and a few other European cultures. One of my more colorful (ahem black sheep) family members came over on the Mayflower. He was among the first to be hanged in the New World for a criminal offense he made while onboard the ship.
