Elva Irene McMillan
Elva Irene McMillan
A photo of Elva Irene McMillan. She is not my family, but a frontispiece in a battered book of poetry I found second hand. I find myself haunted by her poems, studying her face for clues as to what life events evoked her poems! A minimal internet search has yielded nothing. I’m not a big poetry reader, I’m more of an old book collector. But her poems grip me. I’m reading the entire little volume, slowly. The book was published in 1899, and it does appear possible to find copies and even reprints. But no additional author information.

Alvin Henry Friedrich
Alvin Henry Friedrich's father was WIlliam Henry Friedrich (1876 - 1958) and his mother was Ellanora Dorothea (Stein) Friedrich (1884 - 1955). He had siblings Leslie, Leola, Charley, William, Esabell, and Herbert and half-sibling Selma. Alvin married Anna Emma (Muehlhause) Friedrich (1908 - 2005) on June 20, 1928. They had a daughter, Joann. When Alvin was 33, he and wife Anna, 32, as well as their daughter, Joann, age 4, were living in Bell, Texas. Alvin had completed the first year of high school and working for himself as a farmer (he ran a farm and feed and seed business). | Two years later, Alvin registered for the World War II draft. He was 35, lived in Bartlett, Bell County, Texas (where he was born( and still worked for himself. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 170 pounds. His complexion was "light", his hair was brown, his eyes were brown, and his wife Anne was his next of kin. After World War II, when Alvin was 44, he and his family (Anna, 42, and Joann, 14) were still living in Bell County Texas. Alvin was still farming. In the 1959 Granger High School yearbook (Granger, Texas), Alving took out an ad as the owner of Woodie Zachry Elevators LTD., grain buyers and storage.
Anna Emma (Muehlhause) Friedrich
Anna Emma Muehlhause's father was Gerhardt Frank Muehlhause (1881 -1960), born in Texas and her mother was Wihelhmine S "Minnie" Lueck, born about 1885 in Texas. She married Alvin Henry Friedrich on June 28, 1928, in Bell Texas and they had one daughter, Joann. Anna's husband was a farmer and he predeceased her in 1969. She was survived by their daughter, 3 grandchildren and several step-grandchildren and step - greatgrandchildren.

"Mr. and Mrs. Friedrich"
November 14, 2023 - UPDATE: The photo has been claimed by relatives and has been returned to descendants of Mr. and Mrs. Friedrich.

Found in a Texas antique store. "Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Friedrich" written on the back. Stamped "Lackey's Studio, Temple, Tex." Paper with a "beaded" texture seems to have been popular in the late 1920s - makes it difficult to get a good scan. I love her fancy head-dress.

Bowdry's Drug Store
Bowdry's Drug Store
Found in an antique store in Belton, Texas. The caption on bottom reads "Bowdry's Drug Store; Phone 132; Mason, Texas" The National Recovery Administration poster on the right wall suggests this was taken sometime between 1933 when the law went into effect and 1935 when it was thrown out as unconstitutional.

There is a wonderful variety of products and advertisements visible in this photo from the large soft drink display on the left behind the soda fountain "Carole Lombard and Phillips Holmes enjoying the pause that refreshes" (Coca Cola) and "Energy UP - you feel it surge" (Dr. Pepper) to the box cameras in the case behind the man on the right (can't tell whether they're Kodak Brownies or some other brand).

Other ads I can make out include: Gulf Oil (calendar on balcony railing in back), "We serve Austin Maid ice cream" below it, "Ucatone the Vitamin Tonic" and "Honey & Horehoud Cough Medicine" next to the man in the center, Kleer-A-Hed inhalant "breathe in Kleer-A-Hed and breath out colds" and various brands of cigarettes and cigars on the far right.

Probably taken in Kingston, New York. Guessing the date would be sometime in the 1910s? The silver in the emulsion went bad and this is the best I could do to reduce the reflectivity.
