Ella Vipond died in Matakana, Auckland New Zealand. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember Ella Norma (Rayner) Vipond.

“Joey’ was born 28th of August 1888 on the family farm in Matakana to Joseph and Ella Norma (nee Rayner) Vipond. Descendents of the early Vipond settlers of Matakana.
His unusual middle name was taken from his Uncle Alon Vipond of Port Albert, Rodney. Alon and his brother Joseph had immigrated from Alston, Cumberland, England and settled in the Rodney District.
On the 31st of May 1916 at the age of 28 years, Joey signed up with the New Zealand 17th Reinforcements, G Coy, listing himself as being a self employed Farmer from Matakana. He then travelled to Trentham camp and settled into training.
However, in early July, he contracted the Measles and was transferred to Izards Hospital in Wellington on the 8th.
Sadly, on the morning of the 10th he died, his Mother and Father at his side. The certified caused of his death was Pneumonia following acute Measles.
His body arrived in Matakana on Sunday 15th of July aboard the S.S. Kawau. Following a service he was buried in the Matakana Cemetery and is remembered on the Matakana War Memorial - Lest We forget.

Rifleman Hugh Barr Scott - "Amo (I love)" = the battle cry of the Scotts
Born 23rd February 1878 in Hillhead, Boarshill, Fife, Scotland, the son of John and Isabella Scott farmers of Hillhead.. Hugh come to New Zealand and worked as a farm hand on Henry Parkes farm in Lower Matakana.
His brothers and sisters are listed as:
William Scott Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada.
David Scott, Dunfermline, Fifeshire, Scotland
James Scott, Hillhead, Boarhills, Fifeshire, Scotland
George Scott 131 15th St, North Vancouver BC Canada
Mrs Margaret Doudney, Marton, Nightingale Nursing Home, Derby, England
Mrs Isabella Giles, , Hillhead, Boarhills, Fifeshire, Scotland
Miss Mary Beatrice Scott , Hillhead, Boarhills, Fifeshire, Scotland
At the beginning of WW1 he made the decision to serve with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade and Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. Upon arriving in France the regiment first went into the trenches at Armentieres on 14 May, suffering its first casualties during an 8 day "stint". The casualties of the 1st Auckland were 33 killed and 66 other ranks wounded, 8 other ranks missing. This raid by the Germans took place at Lepinette.
It is possible that the 2nd Battalion Auckland may have been in the reserve trenches behind 1st Auckland's position, and some shells from the heavy barrage that the Germans put up may have landed in the vicinity of their position. The wounded where transport to Hospital in Calais. It is possible that Hugh was involved in this action receiving his first wounds and treated in the Calais Hospital. He may also have been affected by the first German Gas attacks which was record as starting in April.
His military records reveal that he was again wounded in the battle field on the 21st November 1916 with a gun shot wound to the stomach and died in the Etaple's Military Hospital, on 22 November 1916. He was 38 years old and is buried in Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steenwerck, Nord, France.
On his Military records he requests that his medals and belongs be forwarded to his Brother William Scott of Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Canada. We are currently trying to locate his collateral descendants in Canada and Scotland.
