Hippies at Woodstock?
This could have been taken at Woodstock - the activity and woods certainly look like it. But look at the man's hand: this could be a hand rolled cigarette but I'd bet it's a "doobie."
Actually, except for the woods, it could have been any of the street people in Berkeley in the 1960's.

The crowd at Woodstook
As you can see, the crowd at Woodstock entertained themselves, even with the greatest bands at the time playing. It had been raining and the ground was torn up. Hippies, high school kids, college kids . . . they all just kept coming.
Years later, everyone claimed to have been at Woodstock. A small percentage of the claimants actually were. But thanks to the movie, we all feel like we were there watching Joe Cocker, the Who, Richie Havens, Jimmie Hendrix . . .

Parks
These photos capture our favorite family and national parks taken over the years.
Public, private, and Federal parks have always been an important aspect of community. A place to take family, meet neighbors, and build relationships while enjoying the fresh air.

Old Fashioned Buggy
Funny photo of a family pulling an old fashioned buggy that is normally pulled by horses!
This photo is one of many found in a series of old early 1900's Badger Gem family scrapbooks that were donated anonymously by a family in Green Valley Arizona. These photos seem to be of select areas including Southern California, Chico, Coronado San Diego, Long Beach Pasadena, Yellowstone National Park, Colorado, and the Continental Divide.
Who is this whimsical family? And why are they pulling an old fashioned buggy?

Influenza - Public Transportation
Photo of a street car conductor in Seattle not allowing passengers to board without a mask during the influenza epidemic in 1918. Given the severe influenza outbreak, mass transit systems were fertile grounds for the disease to spread. Seattle public health officials in particular REQUIRED employees and passengers to wear masks to protect from influenza.
The Sultana, April 27, 1865
Photograph shows the overloaded steamboat Sultana on the Mississippi River the day before her boilers exploded and she sank on April 27th. The passengers included ca. 1,880 Union soldiers heading home at the end of the Civil War; more than 1,100 of these men died in the disaster.
Built for only 376 passengers, she was carrying 2,137 when three of the boat's four boilers exploded and she burned to the waterline and sank near Memphis, Tennessee. Since President Lincoln was killed the day before, the disaster was overshadowed by the assassination and no one was ever held accountable.

Logging in West Virginia
These men are logging. The young man on the rail car at left is my father, Joseph Robert Baker, around age 17. He was born in 1892 and died in 1982. The gentleman with the horses is Mr. Hannah, first name unknown, who owned them. Does anyone know who the other young men are?
In logging, the men laid their track as they went, and took it up behind them.

Stern of the RMS Titanic
Brilliant photo of the stern of the RMS Titanic. The RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner (billed as unsinkable) that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15th 1912 after colliding with an iceberg.
In this photo, you can see some of the approximately 1,317 passengers (of which 107 were children) on deck. Many of the wealthiest people in the world at the time were on board. ( John Jacob Astor IV and his wife Madeleine Force Astor were the wealthiest.) J. P. Morgan, owner of the Titanic, was supposed to take the voyage but cancelled at the last minute.
Most of the passengers were in 2nd and 3rd class bookings - mainly immigrants from Great Britain, Ireland, and Scandinavia.

Transportation
Old photos of different types of transportation - trains, planes, automobiles, and more - as well as the people who piloted them.
Of air, water, and land, only flying through the air had eluded humans for millennia. Wheels on carts as well as river boats are known to have been used since 3500 B.C. But since that time - especiall...

Pets are loved members of the household just like family. There's a reason our pets are often called our 'best friends'.
Remembering the companions of our ancestors and those that comforted us in the past. Dog person? Cat person? That's usually the debate when it comes to pets. As of 2022, 70% of U.S. households have pe...
King Neptune
This pig, named King Neptune by a Navy Recruiter in 1942, became a major part of the U.S. war effort in World War II.
Dressed in a Navy blanket, the piglet was auctioned off to raise money for war bonds (people bid on pieces of the pork meat). The bidding was widespread and high - since meat was rationed during the war, many people wanted a piece of the pig. But although everyone paid their money when the auction was over, no one claimed their "piece of meat." The piglet was saved.
Although numerous auctions were held for King Neptune throughout the war, the pattern continued: lots of bidders, lots of money raised, but no one claimed the life of Neptune. So King Neptune went on to live until 1950, when he died of pneumonia and was buried in a grave (with plaque) befitting his status. (He raised 19 million dollars for the war effort - over 200 million in today's dollars.)

Koenraad Gezang
A photo of Koenraad Gezang. Koenraad was in the care of the Creche orphanage, nobody knew who he was at first. He was adored by the staff and even German police then he was sadly murdered at Sobibor Death Camp on May 21, 1943 at age 13 months.

Robin McLaurin Williams was born to Robert Fitgerald Williams and Laurie "Punky" McLaurin Smith at St Luke’s Hospital in Chicago Illinois. He had two older half-brothers.
He described himself as a quiet child and that he overcame his shyness in high school when he got involved with the drama club.
Robin Williams is best remembered for bringing his comedy and quick wit to television and films. His credits on film and television are numerous, his talent and wit in concert legendary. See a partial list of his credits at Robin Williams Filmography
Robin's first memorable character was "Mork" on the television show "Mork and Mindy". He said that he was thrilled when comedian Jonathan Winters joined the cast as their son, since Jonathan was a comedic hero of his. That made sense, since they both used a stream of consciousness approach to their humor. They both also suffered from depression.
