The Zartmans are of Palatine desent (a section of Germany, or the Holy Roman Empire at the time on the Rhine) and royalty as well. Their coat of arms is a man with a slighty upraised sword, meaning defence, over a crown, meaning royalty or wealth, with a sheild bearing a blue dolphin, meaning peace and mercy. The three colors are red, gold and blue. Red and gold stand for knighthood, and the blue stands for peace and mercy as does the dolphin. Alexander Zartman, a native German Palatine, arrived in Philidelphia with his wife in the mid 1700s and bought around 176 acres of land. Not much else is known, but their decendents are numerous and are throughout America. Palatinate was the only Protestant region in the southern Holy Roman Empire, and was surrounded by Catholic regions and countries, including their long-time enemies the Catholic French who have used Palatinate as a stamping ground on numerous occasions in history. The Zartmans, Palatine royalty and Protestant, would probably have felt some tension from their Catholic neighbors espeically after the Thirty Years War in which Palatinate was one of the first to fight against the Catholic Holy Roman Emperor. Another reason they could have left would be simply financial benefits, or a better life. Their royal standing in Germany might have also been lower than earlier in history. Whatever the reason, the Zartmans now live in America but leave behind a rich history.
