At the time of his draft registration, on October 16, 1940, in Audubon, Camden County, New Jersey he was 22 years old and resided in Audubon, Camden, New Jersey. A few years after the draft, in 1942, he married Ruth C Townsend (1924–2014) and the couple had children Thomas, Ronald, and John Wittman.
Later, on January 26, 1943, Edgar enlisted in the Army in Camden, New Jersey. Edgar served as a lieutenant with the U.S. Army Engineers and he served his country from January 26, 1943, until his discharge on July 30, 1946.
Edgar was also an accomplished musician who was known for his singing voice and saxophone expertise at family functions.
Wilbert John Wittman was born on March 13, 1919 in Spencer County, Indiana, USA to parents Adolph George Wittman (1892-1974) and Augusta Ann "Gussie" Held (1896-1981). He had siblings including Edgar H Wittman (1915-1946) and Paul W Wittman (1916-1987). They lived in Huff, Spencer, Indiana.
