He fought in the 1st World War from 1916, returning home to Australia in 1919. Although he grew up in the Prahran area, after the War he spent his life living in Chelsea, Victoria at 18 Embankment Grove.         He was married to Euphemia Lillian Whyte (nee Brear) and they had 4 children (3 girls and a boy). He was later Grandfather to 8 Grandchildren. Upon returning from the War he resumed duties with the Melbourne City Council as an electrician. At one point later on, he was responsible for electrical work done on the Shrine of Remembrance.         He was also a keen pigeon racer, with his birds holding a number of racing records.
