Name Origin

The meaning of the name "Whittet" is not entirely clear. It may be derived from one of two Olde English terms: "huit" (white) or "wiht" (dweller by a bend or curve). Combined with "et", a shortened form of the French "petit" (small), Whittet may mean "Little White", "Son of White", or "Son of he who dwelt by a bend in the river or road".

Alternatively, Whittet may be an alternative spelling of Whitehead or Whiteyate.

Another explanation is that Whittet is named after a dwelling-place. In the records, there are a number of Whittets residing in Scotland at the Weets of Baiglie. As some ancestors use the spelling "Weetet", the name may reflect this location.
