My second earliest memory is being called "Tinkle" by my older brother's friends, and I ran home to Momma crying that they were calling me a "dirty word."
Everyday in kindergarten, we'd stand up to sing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," and the whole class would turn to me and point throughout the whole song. There were boys in high school who told their friends that they could never date a girl with a name like that. People asked my why I didn't begin using my first name instead when I went to college in Arizona, but by then I liked having a unique name and having an easy conversation starter when I met new people.
I now work with my brother on our family genealogy and spend a lot of time documenting and getting to know our Trinkles of Southwest Virginia, all descended from Stephen Trinkle (1782-1859). His father, Revolutionary War soldier Christopher, took all his other children and moved to Indiana about 1813, leaving Stephen with the family property. My family data can be found at:
