Early Tices
These are the earliest records we have of the Tice family.
Lydia Tice Anderson, known as Gramma Anderson was a healer and "baby catcher" (midwife). Her eldest daughter Gertrude Anderson married my Grandfather Arba Cosman Morrow in 1893.
Born in New York City (Manhattan) she married in 1865 to one George Anderson. They lived on a small farm in Harlem at what is now Astor Row.in Manhattan where my grandmother was born in 1874.
She was well known as a healer in N.Y. and later when the family moved to New Jersey around 1879. If anyone was ill..even family pets and farm animals.. they would send for Gramma Anderson. My father was born two months premature in 1916 which even then was still pretty much a death sentence for an infant. Gramma Anderson took him and her daughter back to her house wrapped him in a sheep skin (something that has been rediscovered in recent years) and improvised an incubator on the open oven door of the coal stove.
As of the 1930 census she was still alive, listed as head of household and a 'nurse practitioner'. and I had been told that she was still a regular sight on the streets of Bellville walking to wherever she was needed well into the 1930's. She is not in the 1940 census and there is no listing in the SS death index and anyone who would know when she died is gone.
Louisa was born to William Tice (1811-1893) and Ann Pickworth (1811-1894), and had siblings George born 1837, Mary Ann Eliza (1837-1926), Emma (1841-1871), Ellen (1842-1875), Agnes (1846-1883), Edwin Albert (1850-1899), and William Tice.
