Joshua Mann Thornton
I have two old studio photographs belonging to the THORNTON Family of Fairview and Erie, PA in the 1880's and 1890's. The first photograph is one of Josh THORNTON of Fairview, PA which was taken at the L. L. Roberts Studio in Erie, PA. It appears to have been taken in the 1880's with Josh likely in his 40's or 50's at the time it was taken. The second photograph is identified as one of Harry THORNTON'S Children, either Flo, Marian, or Scott THORNTON. This photograph was taken at the F. J. Weber Studio in Erie, PA in the 1890's with the child likely about one year old at the time.
Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding this family:
Henry “Harry” P. THORNTON was b. 9 Aug 1861 in Fairview, PA to parents Joseph or Joshua “Josh” Mann THORNTON (1832-1906 born in Yorkshire, England) and Mary “Polly” BLAKELY or BLAKLEY or BLAKEY (1831-1897). Harry was one of 5 children born to this couple including Arthur W.; Walter F.; Henry “Harry” P.; Mayme F.; and Maud J. THORNTON, all born between 1856 and 1865. Harry married Anna R. FAULKNER (1866-1944) in 1888, and they had 5 children including Marion Luella; Betty; Florence Faulkner; Joseph Scott; and Maude THORNTON, all born between 1889 and 1896.
Harry died 13 or 14 Sept 1937 or 1944 and is buried in the Erie Cemetery in Erie, PA. His daughter Florence Faulkner THORNTON was b. 29 Aug 1889 in Erie, PA and married Benjamin Wree HAMILTON (1880-1940) and they had one daughter, Jean Elizabeth HAMILTON (b. 1917). Florence died 22 Jun 1973 in Erie, PA and is also buried in the Erie Cemetery in that city. His son Joseph Scott THORNTON was b. 3 Sept 1891 in Pennsylvania and married Evelyn Gertrude MILLER (1893-1980) on 31 Mar 1917 in Erie, PA and they had one daughter, Jean Elizabeth THORNTON (b. 1919) and a son, John “Jake” Miller THORNTON (1921-2003). Joseph died 11 Jun 1937 and is also buried in the Erie Cemetery in Erie, PA.
Harry’s daughter Marion L. THORNTON was b. 25 Nov 1896 in Pennsylvania and never married or had children and she died 2 May 1919 and is also buried in the Erie Cemetery in Erie, PA.

Earline was my grandmother. We all called her Granny, and Grandaddy was Eugene E Moore. We loved her always though she never once spoiled any of us. She was as apt to swat us for doing wrong as our parents were. We learned not to misbehave at Granny's and expect to get away with it. Always, during our vacations there, we would have Friday night fish fry, followed by homemade ice cream. We kids took turns sitting on the bucket, turning the crank, but it was so worth it to get that ice cream.
Granny and Grandaddy loved to fish, often went on fishing trips and always came back with plenty for the freezer, and fresh caught fried fish for dinner. I also remember black eyed peas, ham hocks and beans, corn bread, and all kinds of yummy foodstuff in Granny';s kitchen.
She had a big red plastic bird and if I recall, a big fish named Oscar that was so ugly, it was fascinating. I'd watch it for hours. After they moved to Waskom, she had bird feeders and squirrels we would watch in the morning come to eat. As soon as we went outside, they scattered, but always came back.

Trudy Thornton was Earline |Thornton's unwed mother, giving birth out of wedlock in 1924 to my grandmother. Earline Thornton was raised by her grandparents, Lonnie and Mary Ellen Thornton from age 2 until she married Gene Moore in 1940.
Trudy did not marry until 1928, 4 years later, and her new husband was not Earline's daddy. One of her sisters, Granny's aunt though she was raised as their sister, knew who the father was but she passed away before she could tell Granny. She always believed Granny should have been told the truth, told who her biological father was and according to my mother, she suspected who it might be, but today there is no one left alive who knew who Earline's father was.
I do know this, Earline was not bitter about it. She loved her grandparents and knew they loved her. She also knew she had a much better life with them than she would have had with Trudy. I wish I knew the whole story, and maybe I will one day find more in one way or another, but I am happy that Granny had a good loving family to raise her and love her in return. My grandmother was a very special woman. I will love her always.
