Natalie Talmadge
Natalie Talmadge was born on April 28th, 1896 in Brooklyn, New York to Margaret L. "Peg" Louise Brown (1864 - 1933) and Frederick "Fred" John Talmadge (1869 - 1925). Her father was born in Connecticut and her mother was born on Governor's Island, New York. She had two sisters, Norma (1894 - 1957) and Constance (1898 - 1973 who were both also actors. Natalie Talmadge was the first wife of actor Buster Keaton. and the sister of movie stars Norma and Constance Talmadge. She was also a silent screen star who retired in 1923. Her last film was "Our Hospitality" - Buster's film - in which her infant son played the baby. After having two sons, Buster Keaton Jr and Robert Talmadge Keaton, their marriage went downhill and they divorced after 11 years of marriage, in 1932. After their divorce, their two sons took her name, Talmadge, and dropped the surname Keaton. Talmadge insisted that their sons had nothing to do with Buster, their father. Natalie died on June 19th, 1969 in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 73. She is buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California.
Robert "Bobby" F Talmadge Keaton was born on February 3rd, 1924, in Los Angeles, California, to comic actor Joseph Frank "Buster" Keaton (1895-1966), best known as "Buster Keaton", who was born in Kansas, and well-known silent film actress and producer Natalie Talmadge (1898-1969), who was born in New York state. Robert had an older brother, James Joseph Buster Keaton Jr (1922-2007). His mother's sisters, Norma and Constance Talmadge, were also well known actresses. Bobby's parents had a troubled marriage, described as "unhappy" and "arranged." They divorced in 1932 after 11 years and two sons. Natalie desired no more children and insisted on separate bedrooms, while Buster struggled with alcoholism. Robert "Bobby" Talmadge was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, serving during World War II. Robert T. Keaton married Esaleta Patricia "Pat" Marie McGough (1916-1991) in 1948 and they had two sons. Unlike the other famous members of his family, the only media appearance Robert made was in 1957 on the 'This is Your Life' television show where he honored his father's life and career. After Bobby's parents' contentious divorce, he and his brother dropped the surname "Keaton" and they thereafter used the surname Talmadge. They didn't have any contact with their father thereafter, except for Bobby's aforementioned appearance on "This is Your Life". Bobby Talmadge died on July 19th, 2009, in Del Mar, California, at the age of 85. He is buried in El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego, San Diego County, California.
Herman Eugene Talmadge
As governor between 1948 and 1954, using a creative financing mechanism similar to Gov. Roy Barnes' current transportation funding plan, more than 1,000 schools were built and 1,000 one-room schools were closed. Talmadge established the Highway Board, ostensibly to bring order and reduce the politics of roads, and instituted competitive bidding, hired professional engineers and gave them Merit System protecton. By the time he left office, Georgia had paved or planned for 12,800 miles of roads. In the U.S. Senate, he became a powerhouse in the Southern tradition: Stay there, work hard, gain power, and transfer Yankee wealth south. Southerners of the working class, until recent times, always have felt slightly inferior. Our schools, our jobs, our farms, our economic opportunities were always inadequate. Our accents wherever we went betrayed us, revealing our disadvantages and, we suspected, our inferiority. The Hollywood Tobacco Road stereotype confirmed it. But then came Watergate and U.S. Sen. Herman Talmadge and Committee Chairman Sam Ervin. There for all the world to see was lawyerly brilliance in Southern voice, intellectually quick, astute, incisive, marvelously Southern. Before Jimmy Carter, there was Herman Talmadge. No doubt in my mind, Talmadge and Ervin made the Carter presidency possible. Most Georgians never knew Talmadge. He outlived himself. But to those who have come from the swamps and hills and piney woods of Georgia, Talmadge was us. Whatever his successes, faults or shortcomings, he was us.
