The Swope family name is a derivative of the name of the ancient Suebi tribe of Northern Europe. 
The historic German region of Swabia is named after the Suevi tribes. Swabia was one of the ten Imperial Circles of the Holy Roman Empire from 1500 to the dissolution of the Empire in 1806.

In the classical sources, the ethnonym Suebi is used with two different meanings. Firstly, Caesar wrote of them as one specific, but mobile, nation who lived east of the Ubii apparently near modern Hesse. Secondly, in later authors the term Suebi is used more broadly, "to cover a large number of tribes in central Germany". The broad view is expressed in Tacitus's Germania, a basic written source for the Suebic peoples that states:
"We must come now to speak of the Suebi, who do not, like the Chatti or Tencteri, constitute a single nation. They actually occupy more than half of Germany, and are divided into a number of distinct tribes under distinct names, though all generally are called Suebi."
