The marriage was later annuled in Australia prior to her marriage to Aldwyn Thomas Swales. After leaving Ivan, Elsie then took up with Charles Moncrieff Thomson and on 8th May 1954, Elsie had a son named Ashley. Elsie and Charles were never married but Elsie changed her name by deed poll from Thorne to Thomson on 17th June 1954 so that Ashley's name could be recorded on his birth certificate as Ashley Moncrieff Thomson. Charles Moncrieff Thomson had a drinking problem and Elsie left him not long after Ashley was born believing that her child was not safe around him. Elsie emmigrated, with her infant son Ashley, from England to Australia in 1955, stopping briefly in Port Said on 14th April 1955, and arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia on 3rd May 1955, before travelling on by ship to Sydney, Australia.
