Grandmother and Aunt Anita
Nettie Stokes is my Grandmother, seated on the left. Aunt Anita, seated on the right, is the eldest of 5 children. Photo was taken at a Syracuse University luncheon, where my Grandmother was a well-respected member of the staff. Grandmother passed away while I was just a toddler, but I was always taught of her eloquence, intelligence, and her beautiful usage of language. Her handwriting was an art form, and she was poetically articulate as she spoke with purpose and dignity.

A diary entry made by my grandfather on 12/13 July states that 'Cpl Cyril Stokes died of wounds, shot up by enemy fighter as he made his regular visit to tanks with canteen supplies. Although Intelligence Corporal he took it upon himself to bring comforts and goodies to the tank crews when-ever opportunity occurred in the evenings, and in due course this devotion cost him his life'

George enlisted in the Army on April 5, 1941 but after his physical, it was discovered that he had a growth in his mouth or throat and surgery was done to remove it. He was sent home after that.

I don't think besides my Mother there is no other woman I know that I looked up to more and loved than her! She was a wonderful person and a loving/giving heart. She was a Christian and taught her grandchildren the importance of having a relationship with God and never missed a Sunday service at church. One of the best cooks (if not the best cooks) in the south and always willing to help her friends and family out. Some of the best memories I have are me and her sitting on the porch and talking for hours. She died in 2002, and there is still not a day that goes by that I do not think about her and miss her - however I know she is in Heaven and in a far better place.
