Early Stilleys

These are the earliest records we have of the Stilley family.

Hannah (Stilley) Gorby
Hannah (Stilley) Gorby was born in 1746 in Willington, Delaware United States, and died at age 95 years old circa 1841. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember Hannah (Stilley) Gorby.
The westward move of Mr. Stilley commenced in 1857. Early in September of that year, a party of immigrants known as "The Arkansas Company" arrived in Utah from the east on their way to California. The caravan divided into two sections, one party taking what was known as the northern route, the other turning toward the Mountain Meadow Pass south of Salt Lake City. Had Mr. Stilley's choice favored the latter route, his story would not have been written, for those who chose the southern route died in what is historically known as the Mountain Meadow Massacre. Mr. Stilley first settled on the Feather River in California, and then came north and built a squatters cabin in what is today Puyallup, WA. In 1862 he either gave or sold his cabin to Ezra Meeker. That September he married Meeker's step-sister Mariah Angelina Burr. The couple eventually settled in Buckley, WA, where they had a hop farm. After living in western Washington for 38 years the family took out a homestead in the Okanogan Valley in 1900. The Stilleys celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1923.
Mrs. Stilley is a step-sister of Ezra Meeker of Oregon Trail fame and her acquaintance with him dates from the time two families crossed the Oregon Trail. Leaving Ohio in the spring of 1854 as a seven-year-old, in company with a great number of othe families, Mrs. Stilley set out for the west with her parents Nancy North Burr and David Solomon Burr. Jacob Meeker was a member of another immigrant train, en route west to join his son, Ezra, who had traversed the trail two years before. The two trains were about a day apart. Cholera, supposedly contacted by Mrs. Stilley's father while preparing for burial the body of one of their comrades, caused the death of Mr. Burr. On the same day, the wagons following stopped to prepare a grave for Mrs. Jacob Meeker, who died from the same disease. These two graves, a few miles apart along the Oregon Trail near the Nebraska/Wyoming border, mark the last resting places of the mother of Ezra Meeker and the father of Mrs. Stilley, In the forward train was the bereaved wife. In the following one rode Jacob Meeker, the bereaved husband. The two spouses met later and were married at Fort Steilacoom. Thus Mrs, Stilley became the step-sister of Ezra Meeker. On September 6, 1862 Mariah Angelina Burr married Jeremiah Stilley. The couple settled first in the Puyallup Valley and eventually ran a hop farm near Buckley, WA. In 1900 they took a homestead in the Okanogan Valley where they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1923. Their children were: John Stilley b. 16 Sep 1863 Sarah A.
