GILBERT MCKENZIE4 STEVELY (HUGH3, JAMES2, HUGH1) was born 3 November 1874 in Dreghorn, Ayrshire, and died 6 July 1945 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He married ANNIE JANE CAMPBELL 21 December 1921, daughter of JOHN CAMPBELL and JULIA RYAN.
Notes for GILBERT MCKENZIE STEVELY:
Gilbert took the ship "Coolebar" from Ardrossan, via Freemantle and arrived in Sydney, Australia on 4th March 1912. He was an unassisted passenger.
Gilbert was in the Commonwealth Electoral Roll of 1913. He was a labourer and lived at The Grand Hotel in Maryborough district of Wide Bay, Queensland.
Gilbert enlisted into the Australian Army on 8th April 1916. At that stage he was a labourer, single, aged 33 ( although his proper age was 42), height 5' 7", 140lbs, 35 1/2" chest, of medium complexion, hazel eyes, greyish hair, living in Toowoomba in Queensland and his religion was Presbyterian. His next of kin was his mother Janet Stevely of Stevenston, Ayrshire. Gilbert was a private in the 49th Battalion , 5th Reinforecment and embarked on the troop carrier "Seang Choon" at Brisbane on 19th September 1916.
While in the Austalian Light Horse regiment, Gilbert committed two offences. He overstayed his leave from 1am on 2nd January 1917 tp 4pm on 5th January 1917 at Codford and had to forfeit 7 days pay. On 9th April 1917 he proceeded to France. On 14th May 1917, Gilbert again overstayed his pass this time in the town of Amiens contrary to town orders. He had to forfeit another 7 days pay.
On 11th June 1917, Gilbert was brought to the hospital in Boulogne, sick in the field, from defective eyesight after a bursting shell. He was transferred to town on 18th June 1917 and then transferred to England on 7th November 1917.
Gilbert returned to Australia on 21st December 1917 on the ship "Persic". He arrived in Melbourne on 12th February 1918 and was then transferred to the ship "Ormonde" that sailed to Sydney. He was placed on a train for the last part of his journey home to Brisbane and was discharged on 22nd March 1918. Gilbert was awarded the Star Medal, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Gilbert married Annie Jane Campbell on 21st December 1921 in the Brisbane district and they had three children.
For the 1925 Electoral Roll, Gilbert and Ann were living in Palmwoods, in the Landsborough district in Wide Bay, Queensland. Gilbert was a labourer. Gilbert was still living at Palmwoods for the 1936 Electoral Roll. He was still a labourer and his wife Ann was not listed.
Gilbert died on 6th July 1945 in Queensland.
