Twila Grace Stear
Twila Grace Stear married Frank Ellsworth McElhattan July 25, 1923. She was 16 years old. My mother, Betty Valjean, was born July 26,1927. My grandmother had lost her mother, Grace Stear, when she was only 15 years old. She was one of 14 children, but my mother was an only child. My grandmother was a homemaker, and had a reputation for having a spotlessly clean house. She was also known for being a good cook. As a young woman she played the fiddle at square dances, while my grandfather played chords for her on the piano. He couldn't hear when to change chords, so she tapped him on the head with the bow so he would know when to change chords. My grandmother also played piano. I never did hear her play the fiddle, but she could add to written music and improvise quite easily on the piano. She was born in Avonmore, PA, at least that's what I was told. When she got married she lived in Vandergrift, PA. At some point when my mother was in junior high school the family moved to Apollo, but later moved back to Vandergrift. When my grandfather retired, they moved to the Shelocta, PA, area, in the early 1960's. In 1977 they decided to move to Medina, OH, to live close to my mother in their declining years. Soon after the move my grandmother had a very bad stroke that almost killed her, but she survived to the age of 94 after spending twenty years in a nursing home.
