New Castle Courier Times Tuesday February 29, 1944 PFC Spitler of Marines Meets Death Message Says Wounds Received in Action Caused His Death The tragedy of war was again brought home to New Castle Monday afternoon with the formal announcement from Washington of the death of PFC James T. Spitler, United States Marine Corps, from wounds received in action in the Southwest Pacific. Announcement of his death came in a telegram to his wife, Mrs. Rebecca Fadely Spitler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon B. Fadely, N Main Street. The message gave no details merely stating that PFC Spitler had died from wounds received in action. The telegram said that for military reasons the place could not be revealed but did say that temporary burial had been made and that more information would be given by letter. Mrs. Spitler last heard from her husband about a month ago and believed he was in the fighting for the Marshal Islands. He had been in the Southwest Pacific for several months. The statement that temporary burial had been made led to the belief that he may have met death on one of the small islands recently subject to invasion by American Marines. Mr. Spitler was the son of Mrs. Fred E. Smith, 328 N. Main Street and was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Foust. He was born June 10, 1920 and enlisted in the Marine Corps October 12, 1942. He received his training at San Diego, California and upon completion was immediately sent to the Pacific theatre of war. He never returned on a furlough after starting his training in San Diego. He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School and as he was familiarly known and had a wide circle of friends. New Castle Courier Times Friday March 24, 1944 Memorial for Spitler Memorial services for James T. Spitler, United States Marine Corps, who died February 22 from wounds received in action in the Southwest Pacific, will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 clock in the Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Paul Spurgewon pastor of the church will officiate. No details of PFC Spitlers death were given in the messages received by his wife, Mrs. Rebecca Fadely Spitler, from the Navy Department. Ina telegram received by Mrs. Spitler it was said that for military reasons the place of his death could not be revealed, but that temporary burial had been made and that more information would be given later by letter. Since that time Mrs. Spitler was notified her husband's death was on February 22. PFC. Spitler, son of Mrs. Fred E. Smith, 328 N. Main St., and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Foust, 211 N 14th St., was born June 10, 1920. He graduated from the Hagerstown High School. On October 12, 1942, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and received his training at San Diego, California. Upon completion of his training there he was sent immediately to the Pacific Theatre of War.
