James Spano was my father. Both his parents came from Italy--Calabria. He was short and dark. My father married my mother, Mary Elizabeth Sedinger on September 28, 1942. He mined copper in Jerome, AZ for the army and that was where my older brother, Donald, was born. My father was a hard worker and honest. He loved children. He also loved baseball and could watch one game on TV while following another on the radio. He stressed to me the importance of voting and also gave blood regularly. My father struggled with dementia for the last three years of his life. He passed away quietly one night.
Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember Joseph Spano.
Mary was my mother. She was a short woman with light skin, freckles, and blue eyes. She was born in Pennsylvania and often spoke fondly of the years(of the Great Depression)during which she lived with her maternal grandparents in Herminie. Her grandfather worked in the mine there and tended a garden. Her grandmother kept a strict house. Although she never finished high school, my mother was quite intelligent and was a veracious reader. She knew a great deal about things. She was talented at sewing, knitting, crocheting, and baking. My mother was also an excellent listener. Although she died when I was sixteen, I learned a lot from her--especially love of the written word.

Donald was my brother. He was a highly intelligent man, although he had been unable to pursue a higher education. Donald educated himself and knew a great deal about history, art, literature, science, and music. He especially loved music and cultivated an appreciation of classical music in me that continues to this day. Donald was truly someone who thought for himself. He was able to think outside the box and also possessed a wicked and delicious sense of humor. Donald had great compassion for others--and cared for animals immensely. He worked in a factory all of his life, but was a talented artist. During the last years of his life, he delighted in being a member of the Turtle Clan, a group of retired professors who meet at Arby's. I am just sorry that I did not have my brother longer.

It is very sad that children do not pay attention to that which is most important. as a child of immigrant parents papa Puliese and mama Molisena . Never taking the time to really learn of my heritage, nor being taught to know l'Italiano. Partly because papa was working hard to feed us , mostly out of fear of not being accepted as American. So we grew and were assimilated into a culture not fully ours and yet of our making. Now years past when I have great grandchildren of my own, all of whom ask "nonno , what are we/ Italian or American? " I can only answer in frustration , "I am not sure." I've been to my land of heritage, crying as I depart for home. Missing the warm embraces from those who do not know me ,yet express a love not common here in America. An acceptance of past family as one that belongs to me. A sharing of time and possessions, little that they have, as a way of letting me know that I am a part. Eating and speaking of life and hopes, shared desires and longings. Incessant baci e abbracci as they say, those embraces that come along with tears of joy and sadness knowing that the good time being shared is not to last. If you my friend are Italian, no matter how many generations past, go to Italy , seek out your past, you and those you find , will experience a happiness that will stay with you forever. It is such a thing that my wife and I have had and wish to find again, perhaps this next anniversary we will return....Giuseppe e Gioia Spano
My grandfather's grandmother was a Ferrell. Her father was named N. G. Ferrell and was a former sheriff in Jones County (I assume Texas). N. G. Ferrell's grandmother was said to be a sister to Frank and Jesse James' mother. However, I am not too sure of this; it is stated in his obituary (which I have a copy of). N. G. Ferrell's daughter's name (one of them) was Alma Ferrell Webb. He had several children besides Alma. He also had a brother and a sister but I do not have their names. Another of my grandfather's family was his cousin Jack Ferrell. I do not have any photos of him and do not know if he is the child in the pictures which is shown on this website. I only met him a few times and I was very young at the time. So I really can't remember what he looked like too much. If you have any information on N. G. Ferrell or his family, Please let me know at [contact link].
Thank you, Brenda Spano
