She loved to fish and camp. She had a great sense of humor. She loved my grampa Jack even thought they often fought.
My gramma Nellie was mysterious about some things. She had a lot of brothers and sisters that she left when she was only 12 (this is what I have been told). She reunited with them when she was living in Merced, Calif. late in life. It was as if there was no time between them. And then, just as suddenly... the ties were severed and to my knowledge they never spoke again.
My gramma Nellie would take me to flea markets and it was because of her I became so interested in antiques and garage sales.
She had a ranch house in Fresno Calif. when I was four (1956). She had a good friend called 'Mom Toler' that lived next door. She had few friends. But the ones she had were lifelong friends. She had a dog named Fresno and a cockatiel she found in an olive tree on her property named Lucky.
I remember late in life as her memories were fading and dementia was setting in how she would try and hide the fact that she was forgetting so many things.
One day she handed me a scrapbook of love letters and cards from my Grampa Jack. I was so surprised to see what a romantic he had been! I loved him very much as well. She gave me the scrapbook along with a rhinestone watch of hers and an old watch of Grampa Jacks. The next day when she came upstairs she saw the scrapbook and watches on my dining table. "Where did you get these?" she snapped. "You gave them to me Gramma." I replied. "I most certainly did not!" and with that she scooped them up and headed back downstairs to her apartment. Sometime later she sat me down and presented me with that scrapbook of letters and those watches once again. For her, it was the first time. I lovingly accepted her gifts and took them upstairs and this time I put them away.
I wish you could have known my Gramma Nellie. She was the most fun and the best Grandmother a boy could have. I miss her dearly... even after more than 30 years. 'I love you Gramma'
