In 1775, My Great, Great Grandfather and family arrived in America from Norway. His name was Ole Smetbak. But for whatever reason was changed (americanized) while completing paperwork.
Name Origin
My dad told me it meant the smith back in the woods. (Black smith) But my research shows a much more complicated history. I found the family name originally was Svennsen. Then changed to Saelebakke until finaly arriving at smetbak before crossing the Atlantic. ( It's complicated to explain why/ how).
