My grandma Joyce born DeVold was a very strong willed woman.Joyce DeVold was born to Oscar Devold and Ida Mae Adams. Jeannette Joyce's her big sister helped thire Dad mend the chores.Joyce was a fast learner being little an all. Both done a lot in there lifetime some things were left unfinished. Grandma Joyce used to talk about her family on her dad's side. They use to make thire own dresses, blankets, socks undergarments, beanie hats sweaters out of the sheep Merino. Lots of back ground history. Then told me after the loss of thire mother Ida May Adams Devold she had come down with a Lung infection and never recovered and that she was 34yrs old. Joyce was only 4. Both Jennette and Joyce were raised by my Great Grandfather Oscar Devold and Ida's dad they called him Harry Adams. Thinking it might have been short for Henry. But his mother helped raise them also.Until thire grandma passed suddenly. Oscar loved his family and still continued to work and make a home for his two daughters, Still stuggleing the loss of his beloved wife Ida Mae. Joyce being the little sister my Great Aunt Jennette Devold later Larmour had her hands full helping dad and grandma joining in to finish up so they could listen to a radio show that they all could enjoy. They had fun times. Aunt Jannette was only 6 years older and had a little bit more time spent with thire mother. Learning alot from what her mother taught her, while Oscar was working in the coal and ironore mines. Then much later in life had gotten to help run a Plumbing store. Located in Marquette, Mi.. Don't rightly know what happened after that i think the business was bought out... I've seen pictures of my great grandparents.also news paper clippings of Gramps business. Fast forward Grandma had a great life. Other than wanting to be out of Transitions in Fremont Mi. to be with her adult kids and her grandchildren. The ones that respected her. Mom and my Dad's mom and I shared memories with her. Remembering Dad,and her memories of her younger years. It was around Thanksgiving. Thire we're other times we visited before. We hated the thought of her being in that nursing home. She needed to be home with us. The family that loved her. We shed tears every single time we had to leave her. I still remember her asking us to get her out of thire. We only have a 2 bedroom house and my dads mom my grandma Vera Bray, 2 young teenager's and a young child that my husband and I born. But we all would stay until it was time for showers and bed time. She lived out the rest of her life until Christmas Eve December 24, 2017 when her medicade and Medicare ran out they didn't want to operate on her arterys to her legs and arms. Because being 98yrs old they thought that it would be better to let her go. If we had been informed we would have been by her side. They called it natural causes. But that's another story. In her younger years the story she told us she was she was in a car accident on thire way to The Hart Fair in Mi. with her friend Evealyn Eisienna and her sister in-law Vena B. Slocum along with Vena's friend Dalorris Stanger it was back when Marlene was 9 years old. Thats my mother. Little Marlene wanted to go too. but Joyce said No not this time I'll bring you back a tedy bear she said! But on the way to the fair. Grandma Joyce said she was in the front seat. The guy that backed out of his driveway didn't see them coming and hit them. Sending Grandma Joyce threw the windshield. She pulled her own head out of the windshield herself and was hurt badly. Along came a Gentleman an Insurance guy. Couldn't believe what he was seeing he called it in by a nearby house as back then they didnt have cell phones ofcorse. The inc.guy said.Thire was no time to wait for an ambulance. So he put her in his car, drove her as fast as he could to Gerber Memmoral Hospital in Fremont,Mi. Grandma had a server head trama. She survived and everyone else waited at the car for the Ambulance to arrive everyone else was ok with minimal injury. She always lived as a kind person even when times were rough. Thires so many stories she told me as a kid. She told us she done many great things when she lived in the Florida Everglades. Saving peoples lives from Gators. She even told me and showed my husband and I how high she could kick for being as old as she was. That was amazing. I know she was a remarkable woman. We never took her for granted she said something we listened. I know I listened to her. Oh what an amazing laugh she had and a smile that was always eye catching. When I saw pictures of her in her younger years she looked alot like her Daddy and some like her Momma.
