On Feb 9, 1878, at the age of 19, he married Amanda Susan "Puss" Rabb age 17, in Elliott Co. KY. Amanda was the daughter of
Dr. John C. Rabb, a German immigrant, and Jane E. Elliott, d/o Samuel R. and Minerva Oakley Elliott.
Luke and Puss had 3 daughters : Elizabeth "Lizzie", born Nov. 6, 1878, Frances "Fannie"
born 1881 (my great grandmother), Josephine "Josie" , born March 16, 1884, ( a 4th daughter, Florence Belle b. 1890 was born to Amanda after Luke's death .) All the Skeens girls married FLANNERYS. Lizzie married Isome, Fannie married Willie, Josie married John Milt, and Florence married Oscar (son of Wade).
Luke Skeens was a revenuer ( US Marshall)in Elliott Co. KY, whose job was to catch moonshiners and destroy their illegal stills. The moonshiners resented this government interference with their way of living, especially when one of their own became the hunter.
Word got out that Luke would be riding into Sandy Hook to report on locations of some of their stills. There were two ways to get to Sandy Hook, Mullins Ford and Kinser Ford. An ambush was set up with a different man hiding along each route. Jim Nichols hid in the Kinser Ford.
According to family notes dictated by Josie Skeens Flannery in 1969 the story is as follows:
While on duty , riding in the Caney Cliffs, Luke was abushed and shot by a moonshiner (Jim Nichols/Nickels) hiding behind a large boulder.
Luke walked down to the foot of the cliff, bridle of horse in hand, saw Jim Scaggs and called to him "I am Shot", and died while still holding the horse's bridle. Luke's horse was rumored to be shot also by Jim Nichols' brother.
The murder was never solved..
Amanda Rabb Skeens, widowed , with her small daughters, returned to make her home with her father Doctor Rabb.
In those days, people would have been hard pressed to testify against the guilty man. I was told by a family member that Jim Nichols did confess on his death bed to killing Luke Skeens.
This took place sometime around 1885-1888.
