Shifley Last Name History & Origin
AddHistory
My mother, daughter of Henry Shifley of Ullin/Metropolis IL, told me that (per her father) the family originally immigrated from Germany to the US by ship several generations before. The story she told me was that when they arrived (in the Carolinas I believe), the ship captain told them that they did not spell their name correctly, and confiscated their belongings, forcing them to enter the US with nothing more than the possessions in hand. (I read that such tactics were a common practice among sea captains). During the long voyage, the father of the family had managed to learn english, and forced the entire family to use nothing but English when they landed, telling them, "We are Americans now!"
