There is a story within the family that my ancestors names would be Van Metre. Either my great grandfather George Dennis Severs or his father Andrew Jackson Severs were "adopted" from the Van Metre family after a fire destroyed the Van Metre family home. Story has it that the children were placed with friends and family until the home could be rebuilt. The smallest child remained with the Severs family for so long that he cried for them when he went back to his parents. In an effort to comfort the child, they allowed him to return to the Severs family and he was "adopted" and hence I became a Severs. I would love to be able to authenticate this story. It happened in Berkeley Count WV ( formerly part of Virginia prior to Civil War)
