Sawyer Family History & Genealogy

I have in my possession an old photograph identified as Eddie SAWYER which was taken at the Broach Studio in North Platte, NE. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880’s with Eddie appearing to be less than one year old at the time the photograph was taken.

The name “Magnolia” also appears on the back of the photograph leading me to believe that is who the photograph was gifted to. Based on limited
research and thanks to a Maryland Researcher I was able to gather the following information regarding Eddie and his family:

Eddie SAWYER was b. Nov 1889 in Nebraska to parents Urios or Ulyssus G. SAWYER (b.
1866) and Hattie COOK (b. 1866). Eddie had one sibling, a brother Grant SAWYER (b. 1895).
Eddie’s father was born in Maryland and the son of J. G. SAWYER and Mariah FRISK, and his mother was born in Ohio, the daughter of W. H. COOK, Eddie’s parents were married in Plum Creek, NE.

The SAWYER Family appears in the 1870 census of Allegany Co., MD:

Jason SAWYER, age 44, a Shook Maker
Maria SAWYER, age 33
Sumner SAWYER, age 13
Martha SAWYER, age 10
Gertrude SAWYER, age 6
Ulyssus SAWYER, age 4
Eunice SAWYER, age 10 months
All born in Maryland except for Maria and Sumner both born in Pennsylvania, most likely Bedford Co., PA.

The family was all living in North Platte, NE
during the 1900 census providing the following information:

Urios G. SAWYER, age 33, born Jun 1866, married 14 years, born MD,
parents born ME/PA, a Groceryman
Hattie SAWYER, wife, age 33, born Jun 1866, married 14 years, 3
children/2 living, born OH, parents born OH
Eddie SAWYER, son, age 10, born Nov 1889, born NE, at School
Grant SAWYER, son, age 5, born May 1895, born NE


By 1910 Hattie and Grant were living in Lincoln, NE with Hattie listed
as divorced.

Her son Grant’s draft registration in 1917 indicates that he is living
in Lincoln, NE with his mother and is working as a Chauffer.

I’d like to find someone from this SAWYER Family so that the photograph
can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this

Dorothea Lozar and Ferris Thompson were married in 1933. They were my mother's adopted parents. She died in Fenwick Michigan. Dorothea had Cancer. My grandpa Ferris and My mom Pam went to church. They came back home. Found Dorothea Claire Thompson in the basement. From a gun shot. It was a suicide. She left my mom and Ferris a good bye letter. I still have it today. Such a sad story. I think it was Cancer of the stomach.

There is a list with this photo that includes names, mostly with the last name Twedt but also Swenson, Olson, Oldham, and Sawyer. Taken on old Twedt place by Midway. Probably in Iowa.

A photo of Tom Sawyer, San Francisco firefighter, in the 1860's.

In 1863, Tom Sawyer was a customs inspector, volunteer firefighter, and special policeman in San Francisco. One night, he was playing poker with a young writer at a steam bath in the city. As they played and talked, Tom told the writer the following story:

In 1853, Tom was a fire engineer on a steamboat, The Independence. While the steamboat was heading towards San Francisco (from Mexico), it hit a reef off of Baja. As a result, the engines caught fire and the ship started to founder. There were 359 passengers on board . . . and only one usable lifeboat.


At this point, 2 of the crewmen jumped overboard and started to sink. Tom jumped into the sea, recovered the men, and swam with them on his back. He swam 100 yards to shore, left the men, and returned to the ship, returning to the shore several times with passengers on his back.

Finally, the one usable lifeboat and two lifeboats that were patched up were lowered in the water. They were loaded with passengers and when the lifeboats made shore, Tom took one and headed back to the ship. He tossed life preservers to the remaining passengers, lined them up in the water (holding each other) and towed them back to shore. He now had burned forearms but he kept towing passengers to the shore for the next hour until the ship was a sheet of flame. By the end, he was credited with saving 90 passengers.

The writer was riveted by the story and they became fast friends. Tom said of the writer: "“He could drink more and talk more than any feller I ever seen. He’d set down and take a drink and then he’d begin to tell us some joke or another. And then when somebody’d buy him another drink, he’d keep her up all day. Once he got started he’d set there till morning telling yarns.” He also said that the writer always seemed to be broke.

One day the writer came up to Tom. "Tom,’ he says, ‘I’m going to write a book about a boy and the kind I have in mind was just about the toughest boy in the world. Tom, he was just such a boy as you must have been....How many copies will you take, Tom, half cash?"

In 1866, the writer left San Francisco and Tom never saw him again. But in 1876, the writer published a book - yes, the writer was Sam Clemens (Mark Twain) and his book was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

I found this photo in an antique shop in Texas. On the back written in pencil it says Ethel - Sawyer Family. On the bottom of the photo it says AJ Estevez, Key West, Florida. So I suppose that was the photographer's business.

This is a glass ambrotype probably taken in the 1850's.
On the reverse it says Alice M. Sawyer, Dover N.H.
I acquired it at auction.
