The Sauerzopf family, in general, seems not to have been especially prolific, and so at least in North America, the name is very rare. All persons who have been born with the name in the United States and Canada seem to come from one of three ancestors. 1) A man who immigrated from Europe to the United States in the middle of the nineteenth century. There appear to be few, if any, of his descendents remaining. The great bulk of persons in North America who have been born into the family are descendent from one of two brothers who immigrated to the United States in the last decade of the Nineteenth Century. (The other brother returned to Austria.) A relatively small proportion of persons with the Sauerzopf name are members of a branch of the family living mostly in Ontario, it seems, and are descended from a couple who immigrated from Austria to Canada in the middle of the twentieth century.

Sauerzopf is a unique family name. All persons with this name, therefore, are related to one another either by birth, marriage, or adoption.

Sauerzopf is a conjunction of two words in the German language, Sauer and Zopf. Sauer means sour. Zopf means braided or, perhaps, twisted. It seems most likely that the name originally referred to a braided sourdough bread loaf, or a person who might have made such a thing.
