The Sanger relatives were often church Elders and attended the Church of the Brethren. In my research I found they joined with Baptist and Lutheran churches in Pennsylvania and Virginia, probably until they could afford to build their own churches.

This is a photo of my Great Grandfather, Samuel Flory Sanger, b. 1849, d.1927, my Grandmother Elizabeth Susan (Sanger) Johnson’s Father.
His wife, my Grandmother Johnson’s Mother, was my Great Grandmother Rebecca Florence Thomas, b. Oct. 1847, at Beaver Creek, Pleasant Valley, Rockingham Co., VA. She died 6 months after my Grandma was born, d. April 1873 at Bridgewater, Rockingham Co., VA.
The Thomas side of my family goes back to my 5th Great Grandfather, Alexander Thomas I, b. 1741 at St. Agnes, Cornwall, England, d. 1802 at Brothersvalley, Somerset Co., PA.
Alexander Thomas the first, married Maria Catharina Bashor or Boshaar, b. 1742 at Bethel, Berks Co., PA, d. 1824 at Bethel, Berks Co., PA.
My 6th Great Grandfather on the Thomas side, Johann Georg Boeshore or Boshaar, b. 1716 at New Heesberg, Schoharie Valley, NY, d. 1789 at Bethel, Berks Co., PA. He is the first known relative to be born in the USA on this side of the family.
My 6th Great Grandmother was Maria Catharina Stumpf or Stump, b. 1717 at New Heesberg, Schoharie Valley, NY, d.1785 at Bethel, Berks Co., PA.
My 7th Great Grandfather was Hans Jacob Boeshore or Boshaar b.1647 at Zweibrücken, Zweibrucken District, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, d. 1719 at Kingston, Ulster Co., New York.
His wife, my 7th Great Grandmother, was Anna Margaretha Schultz, b. 1680 at Schwaigern, Heilbronn, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, d. 1722 at Tulpehocken, Berks, Pennsylvania, United States.
HER Father, my 8th Great Grandfather, Conrad Schutz, b. 1660 at Altenburschla, Werra-Meissner-Kreis, Hessen, Germany, s. 1723 at Tulpehocken, Berks, Pennsylvania, United States.

Samuel Flory Sanger’s Father, my Great Great Grandfather, was John Sanger b. 1801 in Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA d. 1883 in Sangerville, Augusta Co., VA.
HIS Father, my 3rd Great Grandfather, CONRAD Sanger (or Singer I, or Senger) was born in 1755 in Derry, Dauphin Co., PA and died in 1822 at Pleasant Valley, Rockingham Co., VA.
HIS (Conrad’s) Father, my 4th Great Grandfather, was John Singer I, b. 1722 in Germany, d. before 1790 at Derry, Dauphin Co., PA.
Great Great Samuel Flory Sanger’s MOTHER, my 3rd Great Grandmother, was Anna Brillinger, b. 1773 in Derry, Dauphin Co., PA, d. 1855 at North Mountain, Augusta Co., VA.
HER Father, my 4th Great Grandfather, was Peter Brillinger or Prelinger, b. 1723 and d. 1812 at Gormley, Markham, York Co., Ontario Province, Canada.
Great Grandfather Samuel Flory Sanger’s MOTHER, Elizabeth (Flory) Sanger, my Great Great Grandmother, was born in 1807 in Harrisonburg, Rockingham Co., VA and died in 1888 in Sangerville, Augusta Co., VA.
HER Father, my 3rd Great Grandfather, was John Flory I, born in 1766 in Antrim, Franklin Co., PA and died in 1845 in Pleasant Valley, Rockingham Co., VA. My 3rd Great Grandmother, John Flory I’s wife, was Catherine Garber, b. 1771 in Beaver Dam, Frederick Co., MD, d. 1835 in Pleasant Valley, Rockingham Co., VA.
HER Father, my 4th Great Grandfather, was Johannes H. “John” Garber or Gerber, b. 1717 in Erbach, Alb-Donau District, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany and d. 1787 in Moore’s Store, Flat Rock, Shenandoah Co., VA. HER mother, my 4th Great Grandmother, was Barbara Miller, b. 1733 in Hanover, York Co., PA, d. 1808 at Moore’s Store, Flat Rock, Forestville, Shenandoah Co., VA.

This is my Great Grandfather Sanger's family. My Father's Mother is in the left back row...my Grandma Johnson. Here are their names and dates of birth and death:

My Grandma Sanger Johnson was originally from Virginia, which is where I believe this photo was taken. They moved to California to establish the Church of the Brethren. They were a formally educated family. Grandma attended Bridgewater College in Virginia and earned two Bachelor Degrees, one in English and one in Business. Her Father was a pharmacist, a candy maker (my Dad loved to make candy at Christmas), a postmaster, and the founder/board member of several colleges including La Verne College in California. Great Aunt Vesta Sanger, the youngest child in the photo, attended and taught at La Verne and also attended UC Berkeley. She died too young at 30 years old. They didn't have the medications and diagnostic abilities we have today. Great Grandpa Sanger died of pernicious anemia in 1927 before they knew to treat it with Vitamin B12. My sister just went through a bout with it. Good thing we remembered that Great Grandpa Sanger died of it!! Posted July 23, 2021

This was my Grandparent's 50th Wedding Anniversary in Modesto, California, USA in 1952. I am the little girl on the far left as you look at the photo. My parents are upper row center, Marc Johnson and Marjorie Johnson, grandparents William Herbert Johnson (b. 1874 Ohio d. 1958 California) and Elizabeth Sanger Johnson (b. 1873 Virginia d. 1962 Modesto, CA)
in center row next to my other Grandmother Berenice Lucille Woodcock Bull (b. 1888 Eureka, CA d. 1974 Eureka, CA). The names of each are on the photo itself. The Sanger side was settled in Virginia by 1847 when my great grandmother Sanger was born and the Johnson side was in Ohio by 1848. The Bull side was established in California by 1839 by the birth of John Clark Bull II. BOTH my Grandmother's had college degrees; Elizabeth Sanger graduated from Bridgewater College in 1891 with a Bachelor of English & Bachelor of Business, and Berenice Woodcock graduated in 1908 from San Jose State College with a teaching credential.
