Summary

History

Rinaldi is a common surname throughout Italy, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. First found in Florence (Firenze), Italy the history of the Rinaldi family is complex and turbulent. In ancient times only persons of rank such as clergy, city officials, and landowners were recorded into the records and the Rinaldi family was among the surnames listed, however, several unscrupulous families took on the Rinaldi surname over the years, but, in truth, there is only one true family of Rinaldi that can be credited with aristocratic titles and noble family bloodline. Those of this status MUST include the Countis (or “Counts”) Salvatore Rinaldi I of Florence, Naples and later Palermo (Sicily) and Salvatore Rinaldi II of Palermo, Sicily and their ancestors and descendents in their family tree.

Many Rinaldi families have falsified their family tree information, and, a few even attempted to link the Rinaldi family to the Grimaldi family of Monaco. While it is possible that the Rinaldi and Grimaldi families crossed and married at one point, no hard evidence has been produced to date to substantiate this claim. The reason many Rinaldi families have tried to lay claim to the aristocratic family of Rinaldi is not really known other than sense of empowerment it may provide. Another theory is that some seek citizenship for foreign citizens of Italian descent (known more commonly as jure sanguinis) which is described below:

Quoted directly from the website: My Italian Family

Begin Citation:

“The general framework governing Italian citizenship is Law 91 of 5 February 1992; particularly Article 1 of Law n.91/1992, reaffirms the principle of "jure sanguinis" (continuity of blood), by which any children born of an Italian father/mother instantly inherit the Italian citizenship. However, the inheritance of the Italian citizenship through the maternal line is only possible for those born after January 1, 1948.

Determination and recognition of Italian citizenship is subject to the demonstration by the applicant that his or her direct ascendants uninterruptedly maintained their Italian citizenship. The power to make this determination is the Authority with jurisdiction over the place of residence of the applicant: outside Italy it is the Consular Authority for that jurisdiction; in Italy, it is the Ufficiale di Stato Civile of the Comune.

If you were born in the United States (or any other Country where citizenship is acquired by birth, and any one of the situations listed below pertains to you, you may be considered an Italian citizen. (For each category all conditions must be met).

PLEASE NOTE: ANCESTORS NATURALIZED BEFORE JUNE 14, 1912 CANNOT TRANSMIT CITIZENSHIP (EVEN TO CHILDREN BORN BEFORE THEIR NATURALIZATION)
