He married Margaret Emily Duff, daughter of Isiah Duff and Edith Seiville on December 11, 1848, probably in Virginia. They moved to Ohio in 1853, locating in Wyandot Co.
He enlisted in the 123rd Regiment, Co. K of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry on October 29, 1862. He was wounded at the battle of Winchester causing amputation of an arm. This entitled him to a pension of $30 a month.
He purchased a small farm in Pitt Township, Wyandot Co.,OH in 1865. He and Margaret raised their eight children there. The following children were born to that union:
John A. Nutter, b. 2-14-1850. He married Mary Lement Brewer. THey had four children: Elsa Easil, Bert Ivan, Maud Evelyn, and Goldye Nutter.
Edith Nutter was born 9-9-1852. She married Cornelius Brewer.
William Nutter was born on 6-29-1876. He married Sarah Britton. They had 4 children: Charles Leonard, Emma Belle, William Britton, and Jimmie Isaac Nutter.
Almedia Nutter was born on 3-8-1856. She married John Miller and later Edward Cloud.
Margaret E. Nutter was born on 4-12-1858. She married Samuel Miller.
Laura Belle Nutter was born 5-16-1861. She married Samuel Smith.
Isaac Nutter was born 1-6-1863. He may have died young.
Decendants of Isaac and Margaret's son William Nutter still reside in the Wyandot Co., Ohio area.

Nutter, Opie, 49, of Carbondale, WV, died Tuesday morning in a Mongomeryhospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will beconducted at 2 pm Thursday at the residence, with Rev. George Willisofficiating and burial will be in Montgomery Memorial Park, London, byB.C. Hooper Funeral Home. Survivors: wife, Mrs. Cecil Nutter; sevendaughters, Mrs. Juanita Harvel, Beckley, Mrs. Tressa Willis, Mrs. MonaEdeleman and Mrs. Betty Dent, all of Smithers; Mary, Irma Lee, Hopie, athome: two sons, Shirley and Opie Jr. at home; one brother and threesisters and seven grandchildren.
