One of 11 children of a wealthy manufacturer, Morgan followed his older brother, Ralph Morgan (born Raphael Wuppermann) into the acting profession, making his Broadway debut in 1914 and his film debut two years later. Morgan specialized in playing courtly, sometimes eccentric or befuddled but ultimately sympathetic characters, such as the alcoholic telegraph operator in The Human Comedy (1943) or the shop owner in The Shop Around the Corner (1940). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for The Affairs of Cellini (1934). Frank Morgan died at age 59 of a heart attack on September 18, 1949, in Beverly Hills, California. Fields was originally considered for Morgan's role in The Wizard of Oz (1939). However, Fields haggled endlessly over salary, and the role was given to Morgan. Was a member of the famous "Irish mafia"--even though he wasn't Irish--which also included fellow Hollywood actors James Cagney, Spencer Tracy, Frank McHugh and Pat O'Brien. Brother-in-law of Grace Arnold. Honorary pallbearers at his funeral included Clark Gable and Pat O'Brien. Irish tenor Dennis Day sang. Was cast in the role of Buffalo Bill Cody in the MGM film Annie Get Your Gun (1950) but died in his sleep of a heart attack after shooting only the opening scene. He was replaced by MGM contract player Louis Calhern. Morgan owned a 550-acre ranch in Hemet Valley, California, and raised cattle. He also owned yachts, one of them winning a race from Los Angeles to Honolulu in 1947. Was involved in a serious car accident in New Mexico in December, 1939. Frank and his son George Morgan were not hurt, his wife Alma re-injured an already bad knee that often left her incapacitated, but their chauffeur/house servant was killed. Was a deeply conservative Republican. Was a lifelong member of the Lambs Club, the theater's oldest professional club. Wife Alma Muller (1895-1970) was the daughter of a New York real estate magnate and a woman suffragette. They eloped in 1914. Of his ten brothers and sisters, he was closest to brother Carlos Domaso Siegert Wuppermann (aka Carlyle Morgan) (1887-1919) whose death while serving in the United States Army's Corps of Intelligence Police in Germany was initially deemed a suicide. It was later learned he was murdered by a fellow soldier. Carlyle was a writer, poet, playwright and actor. Frank appeared in his deceased brother's play "The Triumph of X" in 1921 on Broadway. Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz (1939) said that whenever she saw the scene in the film where Frank Morgan as the Wizard is giving Dorothy's friends gifts from his "black bag" (a diploma for the Scarecrow, a ticking heart for the Tin Man, and a medal for the Cowardly Lion), she got teary-eyed, because "Frank Morgan was just like that in real life - very generous". He was awarded 2 Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Motion Pictures at 1708 Vine Street and for Radio at 6700 Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood, California. Morgan was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Tortilla Flat (1942). His father was born in Venezuela and was of Spanish and German descent. His mother was born in the United States and was of English descent. Was considered a heavy drinker but kept his imbibing in the dressing room and seldom let it interfere with his professionalism and jovial manner on the set. Was in four Oscar Best Picture nominees: Naughty Marietta (1935), The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Great Ziegfeld (1936), and The Human Comedy (1943), with The Great Ziegfeld winning in 1936. In her autobiography, Child Star, Shirley Temple remembered being warned that Frank Morgan was an inveterate 'scene-stealer' and was advised on ways to counteract the practice during her movie scenes with him. Dear Cousin Henry,

I guess you thought I wasn't going to answer your letter. I was waiting on
the pictures. they come at last. I think they are sure good. As much like
the old one as can be. They cost $1.00. This leaves us all well and I hope
you all are the same.

I had heard of Charles death. I am sure sorry for you for I know that was
hard to bear. I believe you have got a good country but you know I tried one
new country and such I had luck. I can't think of moveing now. times have
changed here since you left. We are getting good schools and roads and the
land is going out of sight. You can see car loads of hogs and cattle
shipped from Pheba any day almost you go there. Some land is valued at
$150.00 an acre that they didn't think was worth the taxes when you was
here. They are cutting canals on nearly all the creeks and you know that
land is good. I can't expect you would know where you were if you was to
come back here. You spoke of airplains. Yes you know we had a camp at
Westpoint and you bet they were busy. All last year you could see them in
droves. I married Mr. Calvin Young's girl the first time a grand child of
John O. Young. I expect you knew him and the last time I married Mr. Jim
Booth's girl, a neice of cousin Eller Brown. I think I have had two of the
best girls at all. The one I have got now is sure good to me and my little
orphan children. Answer soon and tell me all you know. your cousin, John M.
Morgan Pheba Miss R#1

PS I will send you a group of us. It is pretty good for a kodack but you can't
see one of any children good. I have got one little girl baby by my last
wife. She is 5 months old. She sure is sweet.
I am trying to trace who William Pierpoint Morgan is. He lived in South Wales and emigrated to America. This is all I know about him. He is a distant relative and I am trying to put the pieces together. your help wuld be appreciated. the time period would be the later 1800 early 1900. thank you.
Dell has been found! the original mystery is solved. We now have the beginning, a few details in the middle, and the end. But I would like to fill in some of the blanks. She spent the majority of her life not really knowing who she was.

She was born in Colesville NY on March 1865 as Delphine Morgan, daughter of Sarah Pratt and William Morgan.

Sarah died in 1868. The next time we see "Dell" is 1870 in Rochester, NY with Mr. Morgan and his new Wife, Emma Redding.

In 1883, going by the name Della Rose Morgan, she married William C. Powers of the very prominent Powers family of Rochester. In 1886, they have a son, Daniel W. Powers (named after William Powers father). They have a rocky marriage that ends in a very bitter and well publicized divorce in 1895 with her name as Dell M. Powers on the divorce papers. In 1896 she is living in New York City but her 10 year old son is living with the Eli B. Pratt Family in Colesville. Eli, Sarah Prat's sister, is Dell's Uncle.

Dan is off the radar for the next 9 years, He reappears in 1905 living with his father William and his new wife Callista O'Dell. We've found numerous details of Daniel Powers' life. It would appear that he had no interaction with his mother for the rest of their lives.

Dell, except for a momentary appearance in NYC in 1900, doesn't reappear until 13 years later, in 1909, as Redell, married to William Payne, and living in Oneonta, NY. Dell appears to live a quiet and uneventful life with Mr Payne until his death in 1925.

We've discovered that Dell lived in several apartments in, and around Norwich, NY until 1943 Apparently, the $10,000 divorce settlement and any monetary inheritance from Mr Payne had run out. she might have had some type of public assistance but we don't know. We know that she suffered a stroke at some point which had some lasting memory impairment. Alas, in 1943 she was committed to the Binghamton State (Mental) Hospital by the Norwich City Welfare Commissioner .... for eating garbage out of garbage cans. As for names? In the 1932 Norwich City Directory she was going by Redell M. Payne. We had thought that she finally found out that her birth name was Delphine because she started using that name in the 1938 Norwich City Directory.and agsain in the 1940 Federal Census. However, from 1943 to her death in 1952 her name on record at the asylum and her death certificate was Redell M. Payne.

Unanswered questions
What transpired when both Dell and William were living separate lives in New York City before her trip? Did she ever make the trip abroad? What was her legal business with Mr. Okie? Could it have had something to do with custody of her son Dan? How and where did she meet Mr. Payne and what activities might they have enjoyed during their 16 years of marriage?

Little is known of Dell’s parents: What were the circumstances of Sarah’s separation from Edgar Orlo Reed and her subsequent connection to Mr. Morgan? Did Orlo and Sarah truly divorce and were Sarah and Mr. Morgan ever married? Was Dell an illegitimate child? What caused Sarah’s death at age 28? When did Mr. Morgan meet or marry Emma Redding? When, how, and why did they end up in Rochester? Where is Mr. Morgan buried? Why was Dell so confused about her name and birth date? Didn’t her father tell her anything?

What happened to Dan between the time he was with Eli Pratt’s family and the time he appeared in Syracuse with his father and step-mother? What schools did he attend? From what school did he receive his engineering degree? What happened that caused Dan to become separated from his mother (who had legal custody per the divorce). What happened that was so bad that Dan would have nothing to do with his mother for the rest of her life? Not even death could soften his heart to forgive her for whatever it was she did (or was accused of by her ex-husband William Powers)

Holding true to the nature of this story, what better way to conclude than in mystery and uncertainty, the way it all began, three generations earlier, in the small rural town of Colesville. The many, still unanswered questions are shrouded in the mists of the past, growing ever fainter with each turn of the calendar.
