The name Morash was anglicized from the Italian name Marascio to aid family members in avoiding discrimination against Italians in the US in the early 1900s.
History
Antonio Marascio immigrated from Petrizzi, Catanzaro, Calabria, Italy to the United States around 1910. While living in Pennsylvania he changed his surname from Marascio to Morash, and anglicized his first name to Anthony, to avoid the poor treatment of Italians at that time by other Americans. His sons, Bruno and Joseph, married and carried the new name on. Antonio's brothers, Gioachino (anglicized to James) and Francesco Antonio, kept the name Marascio after immigrating to the US.
