I can remember the best of times as well as the worst of times. Instead of being in Division Staff getting beat up with excruciating extra P.T., I worked the laundry room with 7-8 other guys in my division (022). Since I enlisted and shipped out from Coolidge, Arizona, at 17 years young, I turned 18 on November 24, 2007, but kept quiet about it. No cupcakes to subtly celebrate, but that was fine by me.
Upon finishing "Battle Stations" (the final evolution exercise culminating recruit basic training), my division was treated by the RDC's (Recruit Division Commanders - Senior enlisted "Naval Drill Instructors") to a pizza party at a local exchange. There, I sat next to a Commander who initially enlisted as a Nuclear Technician ("Nuke"); he eventually flew F-14 Tomcats as a Radar Intercept Officer (RIO), graduated from the famous TOPGUN Fighter Weapons School, and transitioned to the two-seater F/A-18F ("Foxtrot") Super Hornet as a backseat Weapons Systems Officer (WSO). I owe it to that Commander to keep doing my best everyday until the day I get my own pair of "Silver Pilot Wings" on my chest.
As of 2024, this portrait is over 16 years old. I can only hope one day I'll replace this uniform with the Service Dress Blues in either the US Air Force (as a 2nd Lieutenant - 2nd Lt, Pay Grade O-1E for a prior enlisted-service officer) or the California Army National Guard (as a Warrant Officer 1 - WO1, Pay Grade W-1).

This was around either December 2009 or January 2010. I can't recall exactly, but the photo was taken around the time my 2nd squadron, the "Eagles" of US Navy Strike Fighter Squadron 115 (VFA-115), first landed in Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi, Japan to replace my previous unit (VFA-192 "Golden Dragons") as the latter was transitioning from the old ("Legacy") F/A-18C Hornet to the newer, shinier "E" Rhino's.
The "Dragons" had finished their final deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN-73) and subsequently returned to Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore to make the aircraft variant switch. Not to mention that we also got the meritorious "Battle E" during the WESTPAC 2009 deployment beforehand.
A Public Affairs (Mass Communications - MC) specialist around the same age as me managed to capture this moment as I was inspecting one of the panels atop one of my squadron's jets. I remember being asked where I'm from. I happily replied Burbank, California.
The article has since been taken off circulation from the Navy's .Mil website. But, I still keep this photo throughout the years.
But, here's the original scripture (as re-uploaded by myself on Flickr):
"100108-N-8721D-004
ATSUGI, Japan (Jan. 26, 2010) Aviation Electrician's Mate Airman Reginald Micu of Burbank, Calif., completes scheduled maintenance on the wing of an F/A-18E Super Hornet in the hangar bay at Naval Air Facility Atsugi. VFA-115 returned to Japan in December, after 13 years of operating out of Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Devon Dow/Released)"
Good times, and how I long to get back to "The Life" someday (albeit the right way as a commissioned officer, mostly looking into the Coast Guard)!
(P.S. The article featured my old name, which is different from the one I have now.)
