The Evening Journal. Adelaide. 14th April 1870. INQUEST ON AN OLD COLONIST. On Monday, April 11, an inquest was held at the Meadows Inn, by Mr. D. F. Eastwood, S. M., with Thomas Jones as Foreman, on the body of John McHugh, of Mallala, who had been thrown out of a cart on the previous Saturday and died shortly afterwards. ( John was travelling from Mallala to Finniss to visit his daughter )

The Mount Barker & Onkaparinga Advertiser. South Australia. 1st March 1889. - DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST. The death is announced of Mrs. John McHugh, at the residence of her son, at Telowie, at the age of 78 years. Mrs. McHugh, with her husband and two children, arrived in the colony in the Navarino in 1837. The family were among the first residents of Prospect; thence they moved to Peachy Belt, and finally took up their quarters at Mallala. Her husband was accidentally killed at the Meadows in the year of 1870 while travelling to see his daughter at Finniss Flat. ( Mallala to Finniss is approx 140 Kilometers)

Jane (McHugh) Gardiner was born in 1836 to John McHugh and Sarah (Portnell) McHugh, and had siblings Mary Ann (McHugh) Christensen, Francis Henry McHugh, Edward Henry McHugh, John McHugh, Alice (McHugh) Bugg, and George Thomas McHugh. She married John Gardiner, and had children John Gardiner, Edward Gardiner, Francis George Gardiner, Agnes Jane Gardiner, Reuben Gardiner, Albert Ernest Gardiner, Christina Margaret Gardiner, Annie Eva Alice Gardiner, Lily Maude Gardiner, and Spencer John Gardiner. Jane Gardiner died at age 61 years old on November 2, 1898 in Mundoora, SA Australia, and was buried at Keilli Cemetery Keilli Rd, in Mundoora, Port Pirie Regional Council County, SA. The Chronicle, Adelaide. 7th June 1932. - TELOWIE. JUNE 2. - Mr. Edward McHugh, one of our oldest residents, died on Friday in his 59th year, from pneumonia, leaving a widow and family of eight. The deceased, who was well known and highly respected, always took a prominent part in movements for the welfare of the hundred. The funeral took place on Sunday at the Port Germein Cemetery.

The Advertiser. Adelaide. 29th January 1937. A son of Mr. John McHugh, who came to South Australia in 1836, Mr. Francis McHugh, of Prospect, died on January 14, aged 89. Before his death he was living with his daughter, Mrs. A. Deickmann, of Gawler. His wife, who pre-deceased him, was before her marriage, Miss Julia Ann Higgins, of Gawler River. Beginning life together at Mallala, they later moved to Pinda, near Wilmington, in 1876 Mr. McHugh was farming there, but after two years he went with the first farmers to the Quorn district where he selected land at Richman's Valley. Mr. and Mrs. McHugh remained there for 40 years. In 1920, Mr. McHugh sold his farm to two of his sons and retired to the Adelaide Hills where he bought a property near Echunga. Mr. McHugh leaves eight children - Mrs. John Anderson ( Echunga ), Mr. H. R. McHugh ( Quorn ), Mrs. O. Deickmann ( Gawler ), Mrs. W. Yates ( Quorn ), Mrs. P. J. Flaherty ( Mile End ), Mr. A. E. McHugh ( Charleston ), Mr. Syd McHugh ( Quorn ), and Mr. Oliver McHugh ( Quorn ).

Mary Ann (McHugh) Christensen was born in 1851 at Prospect Village in Prospect, City of Prospect County, SA Australia, and died at age 83 years old in 1934 at Docker in Oxley, Wangaratta Rural City County, VIC. Mary Christensen was buried at Wangaratta Cemetery/Mason St in Wangaratta.

The Recorder, Port Pirie. S.A. 22nd April 1939. PIONEER TELOWIE RESIDENT DIES. Mrs. C. E. McHugh Was Born at Sea. Mrs. Charlotte Eliza McHugh, who died at Sunset Lodge, Mitcham, was a pioneer settler of Telowie, where two of her sons, Messrs. Hubert and Spencer McHugh still reside. The McHughs, the late Mr. James Brine, who was an old friend, and the Franks were among the earliest settlers to take up land in the district. At Telowie Mr. McHugh was a foundation member of the Baptist Church. She was later made a life deaconess, and for many years was a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. McHugh was 87 years of age, and leaves four sons and a daughter. There are also 23 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Daughter of the late Mr. J. Jefferies, who was born in 1824, and his wife Harriet ( born 1818 ), Mrs. McHugh was one of a family of eight. She was born in an Australia-bound sailing ship when it was rounding Cape of Good Hope during one of that promontory's notorious stormy moods. She was born on October 21, 1851, and six weeks later the vessel, the Lysander, and the Jefferies with their infant daughter arrived in Australia. The dramatic circumstances of her entry into this world apparently stamped an indelible impression on the mind of the tiny mite, for throughout her life Mrs. McHugh could always visualize herself as being in a storm at Sea. 53 YEARS IN THE DISTRICT. Second daughter of the family she spent her early years at Peachy Belt. She married the late Mr. Edward McHugh on October 8, 1872, and the couple lived at Mallala. When the northern areas were opened up Mr. and Mrs. McHugh moved into the Telowie district. That was in 1878, and Mrs. McHugh remained a Telowie resident for more than half a century. In 1930, 53 years after having arrived in the district, Mrs. McHugh left to live in retirement at Mitcham. Mrs. McHugh was of a deeply religious nature, and before going to Telowie was a member of Mallala Methodist Church. Mr. McHugh died at Telowie in 1902, and was buried at Port Germein. Mrs. McHugh's remains have been interred at Mitcham. Surviving sons and daughters are Messrs. Hubert ( Telowie ), Reuben ( Dowerin, W. A. ), Cecil ( Adelaide ), Spencer ( Telowie), and Sister Muriel McHugh ( Launceston, Tasmania).

The South Australian Advertiser, 7th December 1882. -MARRIAGES. BUGG - McHUGH. On the 9th November, at the Pirie-street, Parsonage, by the Rev. J. B. Stephenson, John, the eldest son of Mr. Henry Bugg, of Mount Barker, to Alice, youngest daughter of the late Mr. John McHugh, of Mallala.

Grace Mchugh of California was born on May 16, 1867, and died at age 95 years old in March 1963.

John Mchugh of Washington was born on June 17, 1867, and died at age 95 years old in October 1962.

James Mchugh of Wisconsin was born on August 24, 1868, and died at age 95 years old in December 1963.
