Millville a perdu l'un de ses véritables pionniers hier matin, lorsque John F. McGuigan est parti dans l'au-delà après une maladie de six semaines. Son décès est survenu à 10 h 30, des suites de plusieurs maladies. M. McGuigan est arrivé à Millville avant la traversée du chemin de fer et, avec son frère James, aujourd'hui décédé, s'est lancé dans le commerce sous le nom de McGuigan Brothers. Il y avait quelques bâtiments à cette époque, mais le village en était encore à ses balbutiements, et M. McGuigan a vu son développement devenir le village actuel, dynamique et prospère.
John F. McGuigan est né à Shullsburg. Wisconsin, 18 décembre 1848, fils de Patrick et Sarah McGuigan. Il arriva au Minnesota en 1856 avec ses parents, qui s'installèrent sur ce qu'on appelle l'Irish Ridge à Oakwood. Ils étaient membres de l'avant-garde de la civilisation dans cette région. Des wigwams parsemaient la vallée de Zumbro, les cerfs parcouraient les gorges et les prairies, les Indiens Sioux et les braves Keoxa les chassaient en raquettes. L'attelage de bœufs et le chariot bâché étaient omniprésents, et quelques colons transportaient des rondins des ravins pour construire leurs huttes primitives. C'est dans un tel environnement que John F. McGuigan grandit et apprit les leçons de la vie. Après les avoir bien apprises, il entreprit en 1874 de se construire un foyer. Il était marié à Mlle Mary Ann Sweeney et, après avoir vécu plusieurs années dans une ferme à West Albany, ils ont déménagé à Millville, où ils vivent depuis. Quatre enfants leur sont nés, dont trois sont encore en vie : le Dr H. T. McGuigan de Red Wing, William McGuigan de Mackintosh, dans le Dakota du Sud, et Mlle Dora McGuigan, enseignante dans le Dakota du Sud. Outre son épouse et ses trois enfants, M. McGuigan laisse également deux frères : William McGuigan de Butte, dans le Montana, et Hugh McGuigan, qui vit sur l'ancienne ferme d'Oakwood.
