He and 'Aunt' Willis inherited two tiny magnetic melamine roosters from 'Grandpa' and 'Grandma' McGowin that came with a small 'chess' board.
One rooster was pink, one was blue. Thinking about it, though, there were 4 roosters; one each of pink, blue, green, and yellow.
When grandpa and Grandma were alive grandpa and I would play the game. The only object was for each person to drag one rooster placed on top of the board by using another rooster on the bottom.
We would chase each other's roosters with ours and laugh and joke and giggle. I loved those darn things and I loved my McGowin family.
Uncle Toy was a touchstone for me. He was charming, happy, smart, hard-working (he retired twice!!!), and gentle, wise, and strong when needed.
He and Aunt Willis paid for my summer camp every year at Greenleaf State Park. The first year, I freaked smooth out the first night.
They assigned me a top bunk which, combined with the extreme anxiety of being away from my family for the first time in my life, was the straw that broke the camel's back.
They managed to make me stay until morning... in the upper bunk. They moved the bunks on either side up against mine and I spent the entire night quietly sobbing into my pillow.
The following morning the pastor, Jerry Dietz, loaded me up and drove me the hour+ home.
The next year, Aunt Willis and Uncle Toy sat me down and told me that they would pay one more time if i wanted to go. If the same thing transpired, it would be the last. I went, I stayed, I had a blast.
