Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Mary and her family:
Mary A. MCDOWELL was b. Nov 1876 or 1877 in New York to parents David MCDOWELL (1842-1917) and Almira Arms WAGER (b. 1840). Mary had two siblings including John MCDOWELL (1868-1900) and Charles MCDOWELL (1872-1969). Mary married William John BURKLEY (b. 1866) on 13 Feb 1895 in Alton, NY. Mary died 19 Jun 1945 in Sodus, NY and is buried in the Alton Cemetery in Sodus, NY.
I am hoping to locate someone from Mary’s family so that the photograph can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley

It is believed this could be an Ancient Order of Hibernians group or some other
Irish related organization. All of the men are wearing white shirts, some
with bow ties, others regular tie. Two of the older men (possible 50 or 60
years of age) are wearing dark jackets. There is also a young boy in the
picture.

After various military failures and a court marshal, Major General Irvin McDowell was given command of the Department of the Pacific (perhaps to get him away from the battlefield?) and landed as Commander of the Department of California. After 44 years of service, Irvin Mcdowell eventually retired from the army in 1882 and served as Park Commissioner of San Francisco until his death.
Irvin McDowell, son of Abram Irvin McDowell and Eliza Seldon McDowell, was born October 15th, 1818 in Columbus Ohio and died May 4th, 1885 in San Francisco, California. Irvin is buried in the San Francisco National Cemetery.

Who is the soldier in this picture? It was supposedly taken after the Civil War. I was told this was a grandmother's favorite Uncle. But that McDowell was born in 1852 and was too young to serve in the Civil War. The crosspiece indicates his unit as the 84th. This was the National Guard unit for Brooklyn, NY. This uncle's father was also named Robert McDowell and he came to the US from Ireland @1850.

Does anyone recognize any of these men?
