OLD PRINCE'S BRIDGE.
To The Editor of the Argus.
Sir, - In an article on "Old Prince's Bridge', on
on Saturday the question was asked : "Who was
Mappin?" Mappin is my grandfather, Tamillas
Mappin, son of John Mappin, of Sheffield.
My grandfather arrived in Sydney in September
1841, on the ship China. He was a surgical
instrument maker in Sydney, and later he came
to Melbourne. Besides having the contract for
the ironwork of the first Prince's Bridge, he also
had the contract for the ironwork of Gellibrand
lighthouse, and I believe the first part of the
Melbourne Grammar School. He carried on his
surgical instrument making as well.
My father the eldest son, was born in Sydney
in September 1841, and is still living.
