This is the only picture the family has of John W Manning. John married my greatx2 grandmother merry elizabeth leake in 1891 in New county Missouri. John had been married once before and said his wife had died in a house fire.
John was working at a sawmill an one night in 1896 someone piled brush in front of the door an set the house on fire. John awoke to the house a blaze and battered a hole through the then box framed house but before he could get out two of his children were burnt alive. John an marry made it out with one child an they were scorched from head to toe but the child was burnt so bad that it soon died "many years later my great grandfather Len Manning was waiting in town when a man came up to him and appoligized for his father burning his dad's family out an he said his dad had fleas to California right after". After this John an marry moved to Morehouse missouri an had a daughter named Effie Manning but she didn't live but a year or two. Then they had my three great great uncle's an my great grandfather Len Manning first born was Benjamin Manning second great grandfather Len Manning third Leroy Manning an last Joseph Manning. Greatx2 grandfather John W Manning wouldn't tell anyone even his own family where he came from or who their extended family was.
Great uncle Kenny Mannings story
One night I called my great uncle Kenny an ask him where should a man start looking for John Manning's past an Kenny said elpaso texsas,so I ask him why elpaso texsas. Kenny said because of what you're greatx2 grandfather Walter Jackson told him. Grandfather Jackson said one day him an John were in a store in portageville missouri when a man walked up to John an said your John Manning of elpaso texsas an John replied no I'm not an you don't know me and I don't know you. Well when they left the store grandfather Jackson said he knew John knew that man because he called him by name an by the way he reacted to the man so grandfather Jackson ask John who was that man an John replied never seen him before in my life. So I started checking into elpaso around that time frame an there was four manning brothers one was george felix manning aka doc the second was james manning the third was Frank Manning an the fourth was John Manning and James and George felix manning killed a U.S. marshal Dallas in 1882 in elpaso texsas. Now I don't know if this John an my john are one in the same or not but that's why I'm putting John's picture on here in hopes somebody out there will have another picture of him an we can i.D. him.
Another great uncle Kenny account Kenny told me him an his family were on vacation in the 70s an were driving through kentucky when they saw this theme park called gunmountain an stopped in. Gun mountain is a park where they reinackt old west shoot outs an such well they had all kinds of old wanted posters an posters of old west lawman. Kenny's two boys came an got Kenny an wanted him to look at a old picture of a lawman with a star on his chest so he took a look an sure enough Kenny said that grandfather John w Manning.. Now the younger brother of James George frank John Manning became a U.S. deputy marshal for Hal Gosling an was on the train when Gosling was shot an killed John was shot up bad to but survived an was put in promotion to become a U.S. marshal in 1886 an that's where he disappears I can't find any trace of that John Manning again. So if theirs a picture of him out there somewhere I can compare to my john manning that would be great. I can find pictures of James frank an george but no John..
Strange name change
In the family bible John records his given name as John Riley fountain crockett Manning an his birth year is 1850 then he changes his name to John Wanda Manning now I've herd that my greatx2 grandfather grandfather Walter Jackson love to give everyone nicknames an he possibly hung that name on john with a hidden meaning of some kind like mabey john had told him something about his past. Another strange thing was that greatx2 grandfather Walter Jackson nicknamed my great uncle Herschel doc an Herschel was a short man with a temper who liked to fight an if you read about georg felix manning aka doc he had the same temperament small in stacher an wasn't taking anything off anybody.
Great uncle Cletus Mannings story
My cousin Joyce Manning uncle Cletus's daughter wrote a book on the Mannings an she ask her dad what he knew about John W Manning. Cletus said all he had herd was that their was four renagade brothers who got shot up in west texsas an had to leave out an that one had hung around for a short was marshal of elpaso an he then moved on to. Now frank manning was marshal of elpaso for a short time so maybe my john is the same john I don't know.
