JOHN HENRY LUKER JR FAMILY

My dad was JOHN HENRY LUKER,Jr,b.May 19,1893;d.Aug.1,1989;passed in Jackson, Ala;buried in Crestview,Fla. Dad was born in Clarke County( Bashi or MORVIN), ALA, near the Tombigby River...had several uncles who lived on adjoining farms given by G-grandpa Luker. When dad was 96 he took me to see the old home place. He said, "Uncle Sid lived over here, Uncle Sam, over there....etc...and our farm was over here!"
Dad worked on the LN Railroad 40 years and retired. He met and married MARY ETTA PETTY b.9/1/1898; d.4/21/1962; m.9/23/1920 in Deerland, Fla.near Pensacola, and to their union were born 5 children: Nellie Ruth, Jahaza Marie (Hazel), Johnie Newton Luker 7/27/1930),Glen Delano and Ronald Derwood. Ruth was born in Pensacola, Fla.; Hazel was born in Milton, Fla. and the boys were born in Crestview, Fla, near Pensacola where dad worked as a carpenter and bridge-builder on the L N railroad.
Mom (Mary Etta Petty b.9/1/1898) had three brothers and three sisters: Jasper, Bud and Cap lived on farms near Crestview; and Vick Hatcher, Alma Clemons, and Ida Jones. When we were small children, mom often took us to visit her brothers and sisters. Grandmother NETTY BLACKMAN PETTY lived us the last years of her life. She was crippled with a broken hip the last year of her life and finally passed away in our home in Crestview about 1940. I don't remember anything about grandpa Jasper Newton "Babe"Petty. He must have died several years earlier. Mom died (Apr.21,1962) after about 35 sweet and wonderful years marriage and then dad married INEZ JONES, a childhood sweetheart. Both were very dear mothers and were wonderful wives and companions. Dad and Inez lived happily together for another 35 years. All have passed on to be with their Lord. Dad and Inez lived their last years in Jackson, Ala. Mom and dad are buried in Crestview, Fla. and Mama Inez in Jackson, Ala.

I am third of five children of John Henry Luker jr b May 19, 1892, Clarke Co, AL. Dad married Mary Etta Petty about 1920 near Pensacola,Fl.Mom was born around 1900 in that area. We were born and raised in Crestview, Fl. Dad worked on the L&N RR about 40 years. My sisters Ruth and Hazel were born in 1925 and 1927. I was born July 27, 1930. Glen and R.D.were born in 1932 and 1935. Mom died in 1962 and Dad remarried Inez Jones of Grove Hill, AL., county seat of Clarke Co. near where dad was raised. (a childhood sweetheart) Dad lived to a ripe old age of 96 and died in 1989, in Jackson,near Grove Hill, AL, where they had made their home. His dad, John Luker Sr and his brothers (Sid,Sam,etc) were each given 33 acres of farmland around the homestead of James Wesley near Bashi, Clarke Co. on the Tom Bigby River. Grandpa Luker (JHSr) was lost on the way to a new job in Ft. Worth when dad was just a lad. His little brother (William) was yet unborn and dad had to grow up in a hurry to help support the family.
I understand dad's mother was LULA E POPE of Clarke Co.
Dad took me to see the old home place in Bashi when he was about 95 in 1988. "Uncle Wm lived over there; uncle Sid over there, uncle Sam over there, and our farm lay back down this way. Grandpa "Jim's" house was over there by the garden. Next to the garden was the land he gave to build the Creel Chapel Methodist Church. The church was named after our first preacher Creel."
