Life in Australia: On the 1st June 1827, James Lowndes married Ann Higgins in Hobart Town. The witnesses were Caroline Browning, of New Town and W Worthy. The latter seems to have witnessed many convict weddings at this time, and could have been connected to the prison warders, or Church. They had to two children. The Census of Tasmania taken 1837, James is listed as a Farmer, with wife and two children, James B 30th Aug 1827 Hobart Town and Harriet B 17 Feb 1829 Hobart Town living in New Town. Sixteen years after his arrival James and his wife were given their free Pardons on the 18th July 1839. The family resided in Tasmania until 1846. In that year James the son of James and Ann, at the age of 19 crossed the Bass Straight into Victoria. The rest of the family followed later, including James's sister Harriet and her husband. James born 1827 married Anastasia Donnelly in Melbourne on the 21st May 1858. James was a carrier with horse drawn wagons between Geelong and Ballarat. Later he bought a property near Ceres Bridge. Then he settled on a property alongside the Moorabool River at Russell's Bridge. A Bridge nearby is known as Lowndes Bridge. James and Anastasia had ten children; some descendants still live in Bannockburn in 1998. James born 1795 died 23rd July 1880,in Bannockburn, and was buried in Western Cemetery Geelong. Ann Lowndes nee Higgins died 31st December 1864 at Fyansford, Geelong, and is also buried in Western Cemetery Geelong. Sadly Ann for unknown reasons committed suicide. Remember how it was 24th December 1825, that she sailed out of London bound for Australia. Her death was one week after the 39th anniversary of her leaving England. Christmas is not always a joyful time for some families. You and Your Family: I am the grandmother of two of James and Ann's G/G/G/G/Grandchildren, Kate and Thomas Carnell. I started this research for them. I was very lucky to be put in contact with another descendant, Lynette Van Dijk. Who filled in a lot of blanks for me. Also I was thrilled to get an invitation to a Family Reunion of this family.Which I attended in the company of Kate and Thomas's maternal Grandparents Tom and Val Lowndes of Sydney. Life Before Australia: Ann Higgins was described as 19 years old, 4ft 9.5 inches tall, light gray eyes, with dark brown hair. On the 6th August 1825 she appeared before the Warrick Court charged with "Robbing her Master and Mistress of money and watches". She was found guilty and sentenced to Transportation for Life. Ann was loaded on board the ship "Providence", along with 99 other female Convicts. The ship was bound for Hobart Town - Van Diemen's Land, it left Downs on the 24th December 1825. Imagine that Christmas Eve, it was one those 100 women would never forget, and neither should you their descendants. But for these women and girls being sent out here, you would not have had Australia as your home. The "Providence" arrived in Hobart Town 16th May 1826. James Lowndes was born 12th May 1795, at Mobleg, Knutsford, Cheshire, England, the fifth child of Samuel and Ann Lowndes nee Mottershead, married 11th April 1767. On the 10th April 1822, he appeared before Chester, Sessions of Pleas. " James Lowndes, found guilty of stealing from a dwelling house, with one Sarah Webb" he was sentenced to Transportation for Life. His record of employment states, "having last worked at Manchester, for Mr. Sutterfield, and for five years for Mr. Wilkins, a horse dealer, two miles from Knutsford" Described as 5ft 6 inches tall light brown hair and hazel eyes. Eventually James was put on board the ship "Commodore Hayes" and arrived in Hobart Town, Van Diemens Land in August 1823. On his arrival he was assigned to work for a Mr. E Abbott.
