As a member of Chinatownologists at the Kaisa-Angelo King Heritage Center, I had a chance to visit Bahay Tsinoy, which means Chinese-Filipino House. This is a museum located in Manila that houses and documents the history, lives and contributions of the Chinese in the Phillipines. Our LOCQUIAO name is derived from Chinese who migrated overseas and the Clan Association in which they settled into. The word Hua Quiao means "Chinese Overseas". When our Chinese ancestors left China, they landed in the Ilocos Region in Northern Luzon. In every overseas Chinese society (whether it's the Philippines, USA, Malaysia, Vancouver, etc., you can find Clan Associations known as "huay guan". Clan associations are formed on the basis of kinship, clan, dialect, home village, or occupation. Because of the location that our ancestors come to call "home", they were called Loc-Quiao (Overseas Chinese in Ilocos). As everyone may think that we originated from Urdaneta, Pangasinan...our ancestors travelled down south to Urdaneta to farm the land, and the abundance of resources such the carabao, and eventually owning a large area of land. The Loc-Quiaos flourished in this town and spread throughout Pangasinan. The Loc-Quiao can be found written this way in land titles. The popular last name Pacquiao - is of no relation to us as some may think. But Manny's ancestors are also Chinese. His name may also be derived on the location in which they settled - the Pacific - thus Overseas Chinese in the Pacific (Pacquiao). There are other surnames such as Tionquiao or Manquiao (where overseas Chinese settled in Manila). More to come...as I continue my quest in completing my book...the most difficult part of the research is connecting everyone and facebook has made it a great platform for this. Hope you enjoyed reading this....
