I met Mrs. Linkenhoker in 1978, while working at Sunnyside Presbyterian Home. We instantly became wonderful friends. She was 83 and I was 17. We went out to eat, went for drives, sold barbecued chicken in front of Safeway Grocery Store together. Every Sunday she would come to mt parents' home foe lunch. We had great times. In 1996/1997 my heart was broken when she didn't recognize me. Sh had broken her hip and the stress took a toll on her mind. When she was 100 years old, I threw her a birthday party at Sunnyside and invited all of the residents. She had a great time. We also went to Country Cookin where I spread the word and the wait staff made over her. She wanted to see her only child, a son, who was at a hospital in Newport News. We made the trip and when she entered his room, he yelled at her and told her to get out. I felt so sorry for her. Shortly after that her son died. She survived all of her family, her parent, 4 sisters, husband, and son. She was upbeat, always willing to help others. I could tell stories, bu it is too much to type. I hope you have a better understanding of this wonderful woman. By the way, she presented me with a fu cape her husband had given her, most likely in the 30s or 40s. When I protested, she said, "I will never go anywhere again to wear it." I wore it proudly in remembrance of her friendship and it hangs in my closet today. I considered her a grandmother and I truly felt sad when my mother called to tell me she had passed.
