Early Leeks

These are the earliest records we have of the Leek family.

Only just recently ( 2018 ) has this writer come across this ancestor of the Leak, Leake, Leek, & Leeke family. The known records on him spell his surname as Leeke as well as Leek. The exact place in England where he was born, got married, & died ( along with that of his wife, Mary Waddon, whom he married after 1600. ) is not known. Nor is there any known info to suggest that they immigrated to America. So, most likely both passed away before 1635. Listed dates for Thomas Leek are just guesses. That his grandson, born in Connecticut, was named after him is a good possibility. If Thomas had any siblings is unknown.
Philip was the immigrant ancestor who came to America. All of his children , except John, lived to maturity, married and had children. During a New Haven village census in 1661, he listed his age as 50 years without mentioning the exact month and day he was born. He also served in the New Haven local militia ( of interest as this writer has come across many known descendants of Philip Leek and his wife who served in the military here in America.) . The relationship of this Philip Leek to this writer is eight times great grandfather.
More often than not, this Philip Leek did not have a title at the end of his name to separate him from his father. Like many people in colonial Connecticut, the exact date when Philip was baptized at the New Haven Congregational Church is unknown. He wed in New Haven, Ct. after 1671 to Elizabeth Dayton and had 6 children. He moved to East Hampton, L.I., N.Y. after 1692. His relation to this writer would be 7 times great granduncle.
Ebenezer Leek was the 2nd child and son of Philip Leek, the immigrant, to be born in America. Philip was born in 1611 in England ( some records state Dover, England ) & d. May 1676 in New Haven, Ct. Philip wed in New Haven, Ct. after 1641 to Joanna Ackley, b. after 1614 in England & d. after May 1676 in New Haven, Ct. Philip & Joanna had 6 children. A major source of info on his descendants is a book called Leek family of Southern New Jersey by Helen Leek Mack in the 1970s. His relation to this writer is 7 times great granduncle.
Because of the Julian calendar style when Thomas was born, his year of birth gets listed as 1648-49. Thomas wed in New Haven, Ct. about 1676 to Sarah Hitcheson and had 7 children. The relationship of Thomas Leek to this writer is seven times great grandfather.
Exactly when and where Mary passed away is not known. She wed on Mar.9,1674-5 in New Haven, Ct. to John Davis, a Ct. resident and had 5 children. As this work will concentrate on descendants of Philip Leek ( 1611-1676), the immigrant, who had the surname of Leek, Leake, & Leeke, Mary's children with John Davis will not be mentioned here.
John is the only child of Philip Leek & Joanna Ackley who died at a young age. The dates listed are guesses and are not definitely correct. Because he died young, this John Leek ( the 1st of over 30 named John ) he is not always as one Philip’s kids.
Joanna wed twice, first on Feb.6,1676-7 in New Haven, Ct. to Henry Stevens who d. 1689 in New Haven, Ct. Joanna wed 2nd about 1691 in New Haven, Ct. to Joseph Preston, b. 1645-6 and d. 1733 in New Haven, Ct. Via her 1st marriage, Joanna had 5 children. Based on the plan setup by this writer for this work, the names of her 5 children will not be mentioned here.
Because known family info on Ebenezer is scarce, it will be mentioned here. He wed about 1696 in N.Y. to ( Name unknown ) and had Ebenezer Leek, b. ca. 1698 in East Hampton, L.I., N.Y. & wed on June 14 1725 ( also there ) to Jerusha Miller, a N.Y. native. They had 2 children ( names unknown ) who were b. & d. between 1726 & 1746 in N.Y.
This Philip Leek did not always have a title at the end of his surname to separate him from his father. He wed about 1692 in East Hampton, N.Y. to Deborah Conklin and had 5 children.
Alice Leek wed on Dec.25,1695 in Ct. to Jonathan Smith, b. Nov.20,1664 in Weathersfield, Ct. & d. Apr.8,1735 in Middletown, Ct. They had 5 children.
Thomas Leek, d. 1702 did not not marry. He was the son of Ebenezer Leek, b. Sept.12,1647 in New Haven, Ct. & d. June 10,1726 in East Hampton, L.I., N.Y. Ebenezer wed in 1673 in East Hampton to Hannah Baker, b. July 26,1650 in East Hampton & d. there about 1723.
