Walter was my maternal grandfather. He smoked a cigar and wore a fedora hat. He passed When I was 4 but I remember many of his lessons. " If you can't sit down don't eat that food". "And if you didn't make noise while you were eating slurping you didn't enjoy your food or if you didn't get any on you." Don't think he's spoke English very well so I must have spoken polish. He was divorced from my grandmother took very good care of my mother. He died under strange circumstances. There is no death record for him. The story goes, he slipped in the street and hit his head. He was unconscious for a day or two the lady who house he was laying in front, she thought he was drunk. He had been robbed of his wallet. No-one is sure if this we the cause of the accident, or happened when he was unconscious . It was the end of winter beginning of spring it may have had ice snow on the ground. They identified him from his shirt the laundry had written his last name on the collar " Lapa" . My mother was having a party for my sisters birthday when she got the news of her father. I can still smell his cigar. We called hi. grandfather in Polish is Jaja. How I wish I had more time to know him. I love you Jaja and still miss you, I am going on 70. Love your Grand daughter Cathy
My uncle Henry was the only male figure in my life. He was the one who walked me down the isle. Even tho my father was still alive. My uncle did not marry till he was 58 to Ruth. They move down south to I believe Arkansas and then end it up in Florida.
He drank from Friday to Sunday and went to work every Monday at Chicago Faucet. He lived with my grandmother on and off on till her death in 1968. He always came to let me stay with him even when he lived alone. I liked being round him. He was always present in my mothers life. He said something to me once that I didn't understand. He said a brother should have taken better care of his sister, talking about when they were young . You never would elaborate on that. When my mom was born he told me they layed her on the bed and he called his little cookie. Later on in life daughters would earn that name nickname cookie. I had a picture of him when he was young had a very thin mustache and he reminded me of Clark Gable , very handsome. I remember his kisses they were sloppy wet. Anyway ask me for a kiss in Polish.
He was a bit of a peculiar man he never liked a lot of noise , or fussing. When he moved down south he would just show up at my door or my sisters spend the night in leave. Knock on the door and you say who is it "John Jones."
He served in the second world war. His wife called me and told me he had past. He died from the same thing as his mother did a cerebral hemorrhage.
