We called my dad Frank and he was known as Frank all his life. His mother was a Polish immigrant and told the hospital the best she could that she wanted her son named Franklin Delano Kohanek, but they got it wrong and made his name Delano Franklin Kohanek. He grew-up in Great Falls, Montana. Unfortunately, she passed away as a young mother of 4 children, when my dad was only 5 years old. His brother Edward was the youngest, my dad next, and he had two older sisters. His father couldn't take care of all the children after his wife died, so he put them in an orphanage. Edward was adopted, but the others grew up in the orphanage until they were in high school. None of the siblings really were able to see each other much as boys and girls were separated in the orphanage. My dad lived with the football coach in middle school for awhile. He decided he needed to have money and lived on the street and worked in the coal mines next to his father underage. He passed for an adult because he was so tall and strong enough to do a man's job. He saved enough money to pay cash for his car before he had his drivers license. He had the cash, so they gave him the car. My dad met my mother in high school. My mother's family took him in many times to care for him. My dad was 6'4" a very strong man. As soon as he could, he enlisted in the Army. After his enlistment, my mother and father were married. His brother Edward enlisted in the Coast Guard. They would meet again during their enlistment. Instead of coming back from the Vietnam war as a hero, the soldiers came back almost as criminals due to the anti-war protests. My father just wanted to serve his country, but his country turned on her soldiers. My father came back from the Vietnam war depressed and in pain from the tragedies of the war. I have nothing but complete adoration for my father getting through all the adversity as a child and as an adult. In his life, he didn't think twice about saving someone's life. He once jumped into a raging river and saved 2 people from drowning. In the army, he saved many soldiers. He thought of better ways to run administration and finance and was rewarded with promotions and pay. It wasn't fair when he came back alive from Vietnam. Can you imagine going to war for your country and having ignorant civilians resent you for going to war? It was insane and cruel of the media to turn against the soldiers who were sent by our government to fight this senseless war. However, despite the reality of his return, he kept fighting to make the best of his life. He was very resilient and incredibly mentally and physically strong. I feel blessed to have his genes. He is truly my hero.
